Torpedo Captor X 16 can't handle 100W Super Lead?

Hey all, recently purchased a Torpedo Captor X 16ohm box and been testing it with my custom Blankenship 100W 68' Super Lead head. Non-master vol plexi just like the real deal. Was hoping I could use the Torpedo to attenuate and play this thing at a reasonable volume because it's absolutely brutal on the ears, and harness the power of the Torpedo Remote / Genome to use this rig in my DAW and play at bedroom levels when using the Phones output.

So far I'm having a lot of trouble. Basically both input level options are useless - on "Low" I can keep the input from clipping but the amp is completely kneecapped - all the chime and clarity is completely gone, the amp is muddy and lifeless and any attempts to create distortion by turning up the amp volume or running overdrive through the front produce a horrible crackling/fizzling distortion on the notes that renders the tone unusable for any kind of recording. This is especially present on palm mutes. Unfortunately I don't have any XLR cables at the house so I'm unable to run into my DAW to provide examples, but intend to try and get a recording this week.

Turning the input level to "high" and setting Vol I and II on the amp to about...1...allows the amp to sing and chime the same as it would out of a speaker cabinet, and I can even get some quality distortion with the right pedal even at these low amp volumes...but of course it immediately clips the Torpedo input.

If I use the Torpedo exclusively as an attenuator, the same type of ugly, fizzy distortion is present on any setting other than "full", so even the attenuation feature of the box is useless with this amp.

The only other rig I have at the house currently is my fly rig - a Victory V4 Countess tube pre-amp running into an Orange Pedal Baby. The PB is 100w as well but solid state, and on every setting I tried on this rig I was not able to replicate the same distortion I was getting on the Super Lead. So to me, the obvious issue is something happening between the Super Lead and the Torpedo.

For what it's worth, I need to have my local tech install a half power option to switch this down to 50W and install a master volume mod for further versatility.

I know that Two Notes states that amps like this can easily put out over 100W, but if it can't handle even the most basic signal from this amp then the Torpedo Captor is not going to work for me...and I may need to bust out the credit card for an OX, which is unfortunately considering the amount of DynIRs I have, or maybe a Fayetteville PS-2A + Genome? Ultimately, I need to be able to attenuate this amp for speaker cab output, and I need to run it into my DAW for studio use, and I'm pretty much coming to the conclusion that the Torpedo just can't handle whatever output the Super Lead is sending it. Has anyone else had similar issues with a similar type of amp setup with the Torpedo Captor X? Appreciate any insight.

Your Torpedo may be defective. Did you get it new with warranty or used? Reach out to them. They might help you out either way. They go into detail on their site about how it might behave if you over power it. Some old 100 watt Marshall circuits can get over 150 watts when cranked. A quick test could be to pull two tubes, set the amp to 8 ohms and try again. It doesn’t make the amp 50 watts, closer to 70 or so, but still lower. The Captor probably won’t mind the mismatch, especially if you’re only playing to test it.

I did get the unit used from Guitar Center for $430 all said and done, good deal, but come to think of it they did mention in an e-mail that there was an unknown issue with the power supply - not much detail from GC there. The power supply seems to power the unit fine but this could be the root of the issue. I did order a new power supply from Two Notes this weekend ($45 later...) and hopefully it should arrive by the end of this week. If that doesn't help...I did find a used OX for a good price and stuck that on the GC card and I'm anticipating that late this week as well. At least I will have both to compare and whichever one ends up performing the best will stick around. Hoping it's the Torpedo because it's half the price :ROFLMAO:.

Good morning @natederbs
Thanks for getting in touch - Ross from Two notes here. This is pretty strange as we have the same amp at our HQ and we have no issues running this with our Captor X. The power supply may be the root-cause here, however could we also ask that you contact our specialists by raising a ticket at Support.Two-notes.com. If you can DM me your ticket ID once submitted, I can push to have your enquiry fast-tracked.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,

Ross

Hi @natederbs

No problem at all - if you can DM me your ticket ID, I can pass this to our specialists and make sure this is fast-tracked for you!

Please let me know how you get on.

Hi @RossJohnDavies - some deeper investigation lead to replacing a bad preamp tube, which solved the issue. Will be keeping and enjoying my Torpedo Captor X and you'll be happy to know the Ox Box is going back to Guitar Center, the Captor does a better job for my ears at half the price. Take care.

Good morning @natederbs
Thanks for getting back to me and I am so pleased to hear you are up and running again! As ever, if there is anything you need, I am here to help!
