Holy smokes the combo sounds bitchin! I have one of those too.. what did you do to make it a four holer? Looks like you mounted to input jacks on the inside of the chassis so that you could wire the preamp like a plexi? Did you then also do a one wire mod and add the PPIMV? Seems like your tweaks over the years have gotten better and better though it seems like you don't change the circuit that much and are mainly working with a few extra bypass caps to get the grind?

Thank you!
Yes, I just mounted the other two inputs to the side of the chassis.
It's a plexi 4 hole circuit with a PPIMV and my style "one wire mod"
There is about 5 or 6 circuit tweaks in the Plexi circuit that give it that early VH tone.
The circuit tweaks vary depending on the amp and the tranny's and stuff like that.

I think a few years back you posted a few of those tweaks here.. I need to go back and look at any notes or layouts you put up. That combo sounds terrific. I had never thought about that but mounting those other two inputs inside is genius! Well thought out.

I don't think I've ever talked about these new circuit tweaks I designed.
Too many people like to steal the ideas and call them there own so I don't talk about them much plus it's not "cookie cutter" every amp is different and needs different circuit tweaks to keep the sound consistent.

The super lead sounds good. But man I gotta tell ya, you nailed it on that 4010 combo. You really should document that one well, voltages, filtering, etc.

Yup.. TOTALLY killed it on the combo. I have an 82' 4010... i am paranoid about shipping the chassis though. I'm in Ottawa so trying to figure out a way I could get it up there.. how far are you from Toronto again? If not too far out, the next time I head out there, I might be dropping it off.

Thank you kindly sir!!
Yeah, Ive documented the amp.
I'm going to do this same mod to the next one someone sends. :)

Interesting the 4010 is just like a 2204, except look at C13 in the tone stack:

Yes I snipped that cap on mine.. it made the amp too muted and "soft". It killed the crunch. Still a mystery as to why they did that. I also changed the NFR in mine to 47 to make it more plexi ish.

Yeah, the first thing you do with these 4010's is ditch the C13 cap.
It makes the whole circuit sound flubby.
I also like to use the 47K NFB on a 4ohms tap.
It's got the sag in the low-end but it's still nice tight & crunchy. :)

That's what I did with my gutted Laney Pro Tubes with a PTP. It's tight! I think I am going to try a PPIMV this weekend and a couple of bypass caps. See what happens.

You can't really "one wire mod" and already cascaded 2204 circuit though can you? I would think it would need to be rewired to a NMV and then have the PPIMV control the overall volume.

Clips sounds awesome as usual. Are there any clips made by people who have your mod? I’m curious to see if their hands can replicate how you make it sound.

Yeah, you'd have to change it over to a 1987 circuit and then apply the mods.
Do not use the 2204 circuit, it does not sound as good as the 1987 four hole circuit.
