Ok, are they all the same?
I am a noob on the Mesa Mark III series. Only what I read.
I had a chance to hear a Blue stripe one in person and it sounded FN KILLER!
It was super tight and crunchy and just had a GREAT TONE to it.
We rocked that amp at about Gig levels in the store.....
Now....how does the purple, red, black and no-stripe match up?
Looking for Metal tones.
Not too worried about 'pristine' cleans at the least.
any input is greatly appreciated.

Rock on guys.........

Dan

Thanks!!
So it seems from the Red thru the Green are the HOT ones?
I know that Blue stripe one I played was a Monster!
I keep seeing Purple stripes on Ebay going fairly cheap but the description seems as if its not as Gainy as the Blue stripers.
Has anyone here owned any of the Green red or Purple ones?

I researched the markIIIs a while back, that's when I found that link and saved it for references. I also read that the green stripes are practically markIVs, well as close as you can get while still being a markIII   . I also think I read they're the only ones with simul class....I think.

There was a Purple stripe for $699 buy it now yesterday on Ebay.
gone this morning....
What a deal eh?
I just wonder how much 'weaker' the purple is then the Blue or the Red or Green?
Most of the times I see the Purple stripes on Ebay.
There is a Blue Stripe now for 1300 with a Cab. But shipping is 165...

I would suggest going over to the boogie board, you'll definitely find what you're lookin for over there. Last time I checked they had a few markIIIs up for sale and some of them have already been modded too. I've got dibs when you sell it

My head is a Red Stripe. Gigged with it the other night and it just ooozes so much low end thump and chug that it makes your metal loins quiver :D

Don't know about the others, except for the black stripe (same as no stripe). If you can find an early Black stripe, it might have the left over 105 transformers in it and is close to a IIC+.

Just make sure you get one that is Simulclass and graphic EQ.

I have owned a Dual Rec and liked it but didnt LOVE it.
The tone I heard from that Blue stripe Mark III was jaw dropping.
I still want to get one really bad but have to see how things go with this New amp I got.
Seems that the Marks can be had at a decent price with incredible tone.
I know the EQ is a must but what is simuclass?

I took this from the net...

In Simul-Class, the amp must use two 6L6s in the inner tube sockets for 60 watts Class A/B, and two EL-34s (or 6L6s) in the outer sockets for 15 or 25 watts in Class A. So, on a Mark III Simul-Class amp, when the switch is UP ("Simul-Class"), you get 75/85 watts. This is all four power tubes. Switch DOWN ("Class A"), is 15 watts. Only the outer pair is on.

as a new mark III owner in the honeymoon stages right now, i highly suggest getting one!
remember, as the link says...the stripes are just revisions in a long history of a single amp. they are all GREAT

Man, I don't remember how many watts the coliseums are but I think they're something outrageous like 180 watts  Im pretty sure that's a great deal, I just saw another thread and they were talking about how the coliseums are somewhat rare and they only made a few hundred or something.

Seems like to me like the markIII will be a keeper, all I ever hear about them is how great their lead tone is and how heavy they are.....really makes me want one

I have heard.....owned....played alot of amps. When I heard that Blue stripe with a maximizer running in the effect loop cranked at gig level.....it was jaw dropping!

Well for me it was for the style of music I like. May not be that way for everyone but for me it was. I ended up buying the New Engl Fireball 100 shortly after that but that gut feeling I had telling me to buy a Mesa Mark III. Should of went with that feeling.... ;)

Oh well.....just flipping amps still and having fun!
Thats what its all about. I dont take gear seriously. Its only gear and can be purchased again. Unless it has sentimental value.....it all comes and goes.
I guess I have a warped outlook but hey.....

It's Only Rock -n- roll folks.....

I have been watching them for the past couple weeks....
Anywhere from 650 to 1200....
Pretty broad range on them.
Guess pending on the seller or the mods on the amp??

No, the Simul-Class Green stripes have the outer "Class A" sockets wired up in Pentode. All of the Simul-Class revisions preceding the Green stripe had the outer sockets wired up in Triode.

On the MKIII's, Simul-Class was a factory option, as was-- Reverb, EQ, Variable power transformer, combo, head, Cream Tolex and/or Wood/Wicker shell, and a 15" speaker was also an option for the combos.

Correct, 180 Watts and they made approximately 200 MKIII Coliseums

My red stripe Mark III is damn nice. Keeps up with my Herbert with no problems. Having played a few different stripes, I think the differences tend to be a little exaggerated. That's not to say they aren't different, but they are very subtle differences and there hasn't been a dramatic difference between them to my ear.

I just bought a blue stripe mkIII coliseum today....Im also looking at a mkIII red stripe that just rips like nobodys business!..I havent played the coli. yet, so when i get it, if i dont like it, I will buy the red stripe and sell the coli.......I can tell you this, having previously owned 3 mkivs, 1 mkIII, a quad pre and thier poweramps...if youre looking for that Night ranger, Whitesnake, Stryper, early Metallica type sound.the mk series does it very, very well.......

Go for the Red Stripe. I've owned a few different stripes and the red sounded the best. The black or no stripe, which was the first version, sounded the worst. ;)

So the safe bet is the Red blue or Green?
How is the purple?
The green was the last before the Mark IV right?
I only heard the Blue stripe and it was.....

Yep.

In order, the stripes were:

None or Black Stripe
Purple Stripe
Red Stripe
Blue Stripe
Green Stripe

It's worth picking up if you can get it at a decent price. They sell fairly well if you didn't like it. I think the later versions had more gain though.

There's also a mod you can do to the R2 to give it a seperate volume. It only costs about 10 bucks and you can get the parts from Boogie. I've got the mod info around here somewhere.

I am goingo to hold off for the Red Blue or Green since I am looking for the more GAINY side of these amps. I dont care about pristine cleans or whatnot...just some savage sounding riffing!

Thanks for the input!

I am still learning more and more as I do my homework on them. ;)

Dan

I don't think the Green or red have any more gain than the Blue Stripe does.

Seems like what I hear is they all have about the same gain with slight improvements.
I am just wondering about the gain difference between them 3 and the Purple stripe?

I have the Purple stripe made in 1986 MKIII combo with a Black widow 90 speaker (i think, havent looked at it in a while). Incredibly loud amp. Has more gain then I use. Self Bias pair 6L6 3 channels but there is a vol difference from ch1 -ch2 and I believe mesa has a mod for that. Great amp, I have had it since 1993/94. The one amp I havent parted with. Did have to have the transformer for the reverb and tank replaced and my amp tech went over it and replaced a few caps. Didnt change the tone at all. Has a great reverb but not fendery.

I have had a luv /hate relationship with it for a long time. Once you like the amp and tone for what it is and realize its not a Marshall or Fender its great. Think "Black magic women" Santana tone just add a OD808 pedal and Les Paul ;)

Ive owned 3- mkIV b's and they were a little different in feel and gain, but not that much...and if you get any of them turned up nice and cookin, they all sound great...If my buddy doesnt go for the red stripe and I still like the blue coliseum thats coming, I may still grab the red stripe III...I would love to get a quad preamp again, and this time get the mkIIc+ mod for it....oh, it never ends :
