Recreate Tempo of the Damned Tone - Langner Marshall

I think with the Langners it would be gain stages, and he had multiple versions. Some were 4 and some 5 gain stages, then had the 5 stage with the Hyper mod added.

Looks like it has 2 extra preamp tubes vs stock, 5 in total.

Funny thing is that it's the same amp! Every album from Fabulous Disaster to Tempo was this amp, though Impact is Imminent is the first one where it's modded. Blood In, Blood Out is, I believe, a Kemper profile of the amp. A crazy amount of killer tones came out of that amp.

Wow, even just one extra tube is 6 available triodes total. Does it have a tube buffered fx loop or any other channels?

Has an fx loop, I’m assuming the the 5th tube is for that.

On Pleasures I used a Boogie mark three for rythmns. We had a lot of battles with our producer. Not happy with the tone, rythmn wise, at all. On Fabulous(Like father, like son) I used my Marshalls, same ones I have know, only they weren't modded yet.
And thanks for the welcome!

The thing is I actually kinda dig the tone on Pleasures. I mean, it's a Mark III! He should be more upset about the snare, which sounds like someone smacking a piece of paper.

Makes sense. Assuming it is a serial loop without a bypass switch then that adds another shroud of mystery regarding the final tone. Some fx loops are essentially transparent while others are part of the core tone. The Soldano SLO loop being an example of a non-transparent loop that is part of the amp's core tone. With high gain, using a serial loop to smooth it out and/or shave off some fizzy top end wouldn't be that unusual.

Can you tell if both triodes of both extra tubes are being used? There would be 3 adjacent unused pins if a triode was not being used. I would expect the FX loop tube socket to have a resistor soldered from pin-to-pin (but another tube socket should have it as well, so 2 preamp tubes would have a resistor perched right over the socket).

One of my favorite tones, well done! Those have an extra preamp tube is that right?

I believe so although I don’t know the exact mod Todd did to this one.
I may easily be wrong, but it sounds like an early 4 stage mod without the power supply changes to the tubes. Todd had different stuff he did for different people depending on their request. He didn't have names or numbers assigned to them so its harder to tell. Curt Mitchells Langner Marshalls are 4 stage mods with the power supply changes if I remember correctly. If you listen to the Viscous Rumors Album, those are the 5 stage versions, and that album is a perfect picture of his 5 stage mod. I think Exodus went to the 5 stage mods when Todd got them nailed down. Cool stuff, congrats on the score, hard to find them out in the wild!
Does anyone know what the power supply mod is ? Is it only for the preamp, or the poweramp, or the whole amp ? Is it more voltage or less ? More filtering ? Anyone ?

My first guess when I read it is that he creates another power supply node (requiring another filter cap and dropping resistor) for the new tubes instead of just 'stealing' it from the existing nodes. And then also adjusting the existing dropping resistors to account for the extra current (and thus voltage drop across them).

Thanks ! You're probably right.

Again, Im not a tech, and this was nearly 40 years ago, but Todd told me he was beefing up the power supply to the preamp tubes, its wasn't that the voltage was increased, more of the same voltage was available from what I understood. He did say it was critical to get that tone. It wasn't a separate mod, its something he did later in some of the late 4 stage and all the 5 stage mods from what I remember. Not sure what that would involve

I know ! Tempo is that amp through G12T-75 Celestions and some kind of non-active EMGs. The live one is same amp through Marshall Vintage speakers and EMG81s.

Yep, TotD is an ESP V with EMG-HZs into the Marshall with T-75s. I actually didn't know that about ALiV, but it does make sense.

Back of the amp:

It has a clean channel and B option which is foot switchable and acts as a mid/solo boost:

Holy shit, that's an extensive mod and almost looks like he replaces the circuit board with one that has 2x board-mounted sockets.

So is this really a 5 stage mod or is one of the tubes for the loop and the other is for the clean channel on the back ? Can we get a gut shot of the chassis out of the headshell ? Is there any goop inside it ?
