I don't think either of you understand the intrinsic, terrifying problem with this - if they can tax a used item every time it changes hands, there is literally nothing they cannot tax.

So who monitors the 10s of thousands of daily on-line transactions (made thru established
U.S. businesses) to verify that buyers and sellers are being honest when they check the USED box?

Simple:

Don't want any BS when it comes to used shit?
Avoid using a federally licensed broker.

@Donnie B. And @Marykelly

Because THEY ALREADY TAXED IT WHEN IT WAS BOUGHT NEW. Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Marshall head.

What if you grab a gallon of milk from your mother? That's according to @Marykelly definition, a "capital gain" now.
I totally understand where you are coming from; and agree with your point of view. But, we all knew the day was coming when our ‘free internet ride’ was coming to an end with taxed transactions.
But think of it this way: yes the item was taxed when purchased new. But, is a used car taxed when you purchase it? Of course it is. They nail you when you register it, if you buy from a private party. So this unfortunately is the same thing-except we can still sell our items outside of eBay, Reverb and NOT have to pay said taxes.
Can’t do that with a vehicle.

Correct. And I don't.
Criminals all of them. They take your money and send it to Iran.

Gotta make sure the number one state sponsor of terrorism has millions of dollars for LGBT indoctrination -_- I'm sure they'll promise to totally NOT throw people off rooftops and ak47 women in the head for nail polish, in exchange for another Obamaplane full of Benjamins.

Sigh.

Either way, I don't think this is a partisan issue. Or that it shouldn't be a partisan issue.

It's a fundamental rights issue.

I don't think this is a partisan issue.

Then why drag politics into it?

Why are you getting all crazy about rights when all we're talking about is simple business transactions?

And keep the used car analogy in mind before lashing out at Reverb, Ebay, etc.

Me?

You already did donkey, with your stirring rendition of "the GOP took my rights away"

but I'd rather avoid it for this specific issue, because BOTH sides of the political spectrum don't seem to see the danger of "every individual citizen being treated like a corporation."

Its called the IRS more crooked than govt.

According to me I dont owe them shit but according them well.

I 100% agree.

Wait, what?.......
made a "capital gain" on grabbing a gallon of milk from your mother. In my hypothetical.

It's a transaction, and an economic one at that, just like any other.

Aren't they pretty much the same thing?
It's really easy to point fingers and yell at the agencies.

But the business has to sign up for the rules and then the buyer/seller
have to agree to the business' terms if they choose to use them.

That's not donkey vs elephant.

On 20/20 probably 20 years ago now they were investigating a large percentage of IRS employees that had not paid taxes in decades.

No Donald they are not the same thing, IRS is an island to itself.

Ooops. I mistook the word 'property'.

I was about to type something then realized I know you know your milk analogy is stupid.

But trust me, when I list my red III on Reverb I'll be more than willing to do the deal off-line.

No, it is not stupid.

If neither of you understand why it's the same principle, then I don't have the crayons, nor the time to educate you on basic economics.
