VHT/Fryette amps - best high gain tones....ever?

They are certainly up there to me IMO. While the Deliverance is a crushing amp on its own, I prefer the percussive attack of the UL more.

To the people that complain about bland voicing with no character, put a boost flavor of your choice in front and problem solved. The UL just might be the best pedal taking amp I’ve ever experienced. Let’s the true character of your pedal shine whichever you choose. Klon flavor, TS flavor, BB flavor, you name it, it blends beautifully.
They take boosts extremely well, that’s true, but still wasn’t enough for it to be a keeper for me vs my other amps, but it was up against some steep competition (one of which was a Wizard)

So serious question for debate. Would you say your Wizards are miles ahead of the VHT/Fryette's or is it more of a "they're pretty close" type of feeling? Trying to quantify the diff
Depends on what tonal or feel aspects you care about. I always try to stay away from hyperbole or saying anything is the best ever, but imo the Wizards are way ahead in sounding organic and raw like older amps. I don’t find Fryette’s/VHT’s to be processed sounding per se like Engl’s or JVM’s, but leaning more in that direction vs Wizard’s for sure and they have this thing in the highs that I interpret as a little brittle/not organic. I found the wizards I’ve had to be more open, clear and punchy, but not necessarily by miles. With clarity, similar, but in detail/nuance wizards win easily imo with that more more raw/organic sound that tends to always come with more detail/nuance to the notes

For my taste both wizards & Fryette’s I find too smooth/lacking growl on powerchords vs Marshall’s & Recto’s, especially throughout the midrange (this is what I mean when I say hollow), so they will never be my all time favorite amps for that, but my Wizard has been a keeper for other great qualities it has. For clarity/articulation nothing I’ve tried yet touched the Dino I tried recently, but the next best ones IME for that (and better imo for that than Fryette’s) have probably been the Hermansson mods & Wizards

I own an early Uber serial #045 and it is no slouch for sure!
Mine I think is in the 120’s and one of my top 5 high gainers I’ve tried for my taste, but pretty opposite flavor of any Wizard or Fryette/VHT

Oooh you finally got to try one?

Yes I’ve lost recently trying a couple epic amp virginities lately lol, but I’ll keep those other ones off here. Just gotta try at some point a real Trainwreck now. I’ll post on ig some iPhone vids of them. I tried playing one of your things on it (with my twists lol) and yes none of my other amps cut it for that stuff. It is what it is. Some memory slip ups as there often are when I’m being filmed lol

It definitely has its own feel and vibe, especially the articulation, can't wait to see the IG vids!

I sold mine but I do like them . And I’d get ULTRA Lead 2 if it comes out . It was not my fav amp but I do wish I had kept my deliverance. Such a big tight tone

It does. Despite me being sloppy, it made me feel still like a much better player than I am. I have a Hermansson clip too. Wish I took clips of other stuff too, but oh well

I know you're feelings towards the lack of growl and totally get it in regards to the 16 MTL I had, as I felt it was flat in the mids...just very neutral without any particular growl or snarl. The three MCIIs I've owned all had a dominant low mid growl and upper mid snarl which is one of my favorite attributes of those amps. The KT150 MCII MK2 I recently acquired is extremely aggressive sounding in that regard. I understand the Recto growl, which is it's own thing all together and that is killer too.

I still have an Ultra-lead in my stable and I would still firmly put it in the top 3 amps I have ever owned.

People seem to mix up "stiff" and "unforgiving" when talking about Fryettes (and I assume Wizard). I don't find my Ultra-lead stiff: you touch the string and the note jumps out of the speaker. It is certainly unforgiving though, in that you are going to hear exactly what you played! I have actually found some of the Diezel stuff I have owned to feel stiffer to play (perceived effort on strings) than my Fryette.

Anyway....love mine. When I will ever get a chance to compare to "better" amps like Wizard, Hermansson or Larry I have no idea, as they are not common in Canada and cost an absolute fortune here.

Sold all of the ones I've owned. They always sound killer when I first plug into them, and 6 months later I just can't do it anymore.

Definitely like them, but always find them lacking something compared to certain other amps.

I never found them stiff or unforgiving either and would agree about many Diezel’s feeling stiffer despite sounding less stiff. I’ve though found other amps that have the notes jump out even more and faster than the Fryette’s IME. For my taste I just prefer amps that have more growl/roar on powerchords and more overall tonal complexity, but I don’t particularly think the Hermansson’s and Wizard’s are that great in that regard either

I don't know that I'd say best ever...

But I've owned a d60 since a couple years after they came out, and for an amp that's easy to dial in, and sounds pretty fantastic in any situation I've thrown it into, it's really hard to beat. I've used it for thrash, death metal, stupid chuggy breakdown metal, & a classic rock cover band, with a ton of different cabs, speakers, guitars & pickups.

I’ve only had an MCI with C transformers (supposedly more Marshall-y or raw from what I’ve heard, but idk). I found it similarly hollow/bland in the mids and lack of growl as my 2016 MTL, just a lot more present in the mids & uppermids, but not more growl or complex tone in those frequencies. Maybe I’d like the MCII’s more, but the clips I’ve heard seem to sound like how I remember my MCI being. For growl, the Recto’s, especially my Rev C & D are some of my all time favorites. Very throaty

I would love to try a deliverance or two. Need to try 60 and 120 just because you hear so many differences between the two. I usually just want the bigger for headroom, but the 60 gets a lot of love.

Other than Helmet, what are some gnarly Fryette tones?
Unearth's "Stings of Conscience" and "Endless" EP's are Fryette. I have also seen them live a few times back in the day using both Ultra-lead's and Deliverances and their tone was crushing! That said, apparently Ken Susi never really loved the Fryette stuff. An Ultra-lead is also all over Slipknot's "Iowa" album.
