You don't invest in something unless you are going to make a profit. Where were all of the ridiculous profits coming from?

What @JohnnyGtar said. Slave labor means big profits. Northern investors helped fund a lot of the slave trade.

My theory is the real reason was to establish a precedent for a more powerful, centralized, federal government that many warned us against.

Wasn’t the confederacy much more powerful though, government wise? Much more a republic than a democracy it seems

I'm not qualified to answer that question I just have family papers and history documenting some of the plantation life in my family line.
