Agreed. Cheap mic pres are noisy junk. Pretty much all cheap outboard gear has a high noise floor that's unusable for anything serious. I've thrown a couple cheap pre's and compressors away in my time.

Same. That's why I'm trying to warn @skoora

It's like literally burning hundred dollar bills

The mic pres in your average nice interface nowadays are actually just as good if not better

The 800-1000$ mark seems to be where pres actually start being worth investing in, and even then it's dependent on what you're moving and micing

The main thing I’m trying to decide on is if I’m more of an API guy or a Neve guy (Looking at clones, derivatives etc.). A lot of the sound clips I hear of the Neve style is fat and warmer but maybe too much so. I like aggressive rock and find a lot of new music has too much warmth and fatness and loses the smack in the face that bands in the 70’s and early 80’s would give you. I pretty much will be recording guitars (Gibson, Marshall), bass and vocals. Any keys and drums will be software (which may or may not benefit from passing through the pres after the fact). I guess the answer is get both styles and use them as their particular voice suits but that starts getting into money bag’s territory for what is a hobby.

I know the feeling .... after I talked myself out of a few guitars ... I started looking for cool / rare pedals ( to me anyway ) trying to hit the 499.00 mark .... lol ...... bastards
lol…looking at pedals now

No experience with API, I do have a Neve tho..

You don't have to make it fat if you don't want..

I find that good preamps mostly sound like they do nothing until you take them out of the chain. I would be happy with any of those you mentioned. We have a UA solo 610 here for vocals and acoustics mostly but it's pushing 20 years old and needs serviced but it sure is quiet and rich sounding when it's working right. They are just about double the cost what we paid in '06. Crazy money.

Are you using actual Neve or one of the clones? That solo guitar track sounded pretty good. I know some have a HPF but thinking about top end response which that track seems pretty nice on.

1073 DPX.. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/1073DPX--ams-neve-1073dpx-2-channel-microphone-preamp-and-eq

The EQ is smooth and adds texture.. Really easy to use. You can hear the difference when comparing it to in the box EQ's which sound stale.
I used it for the Bass on that clip as well, plugging into the DI Jack in the Front..
Shit, nice price tag on that. I’ll file that particular unit in the “I’ll have a ‘69 Marshall again some day” budget folder…lol
kidding aside, nice. I don’t begrudge anyone who can afford the good stuff.

I used this deal 3x in the past couple weeks for a guitar, amp, and cab. One thing about GC that's fishy is on used gear the individual shipping costs of each item goes up when you add more to the cart. Example amp shipping was $40.XX by itself. Cab shipping was $40.XX by itself. When put in the same order the shipping total is $100.XX (or an extra $20.) So I bought them separate. Be careful buying numerous used items at once. When I had more than three used items in the cart it was $20 extra per item shipped.

Not rich.. I drive a 21 yr old car.. I can fix things..
But SW 3 year same as cash is your friend.. BTW it went up $250 since I got mine..

I’ve actually been looking at all price ranges of mic pre’s hence my rabbit hole comment earlier. I’m not hard set on it being a budget one at all. But ultimately just wanted to have a fun purchase of a delay pedal and finagle the deal with getting the total near the required 499. Was actually looking at a used WA12 (would do two), Tonebeast or even their WA412 (like the 1 rack space idea). Not sure the Neve style is what I need with the music I tend to record. Was also looking at the Art MPA II as it at least had an option to run at a decent voltage on the tube And it did fare well in a few video’s I saw vs. a Scarlett which is my interface. Already have a 421.
I kinda want to try the ToneBeast. I’ve been using my Tonelux mic pres the last two years and love them. Had a BAE but didn’t love it.

I have limited rack space on my desk so figured if I like the WA12 I can get another and it’s still 1U. The TB looked interesting but I decided I wouldn’t need the extra features. I have some old 90’s ART mic pre’s, a two channel 1U and a tubepac (half rack with compressor as well) the ones that don’t even run the tubes at proper voltage…lol Crap, I’ve had them since new and realized they have moved across 3 States and 7 homes.lol) I use them just to have extra mic inputs with phantom etc. .I’ll definitely have a chuckle if I don’t notice a difference between them and the Warm Audio.

Now the hunt is on for a decent 1U stereo compressor. Meaning two independent channels that can be linked when necessary.

^^^ I've had a bunch of affordable Compressors over the years. I'm semi looking at high end stuff. The Distressor has been around for a while but that's a lot of mo money.. But I used an ART Pro VLA in the Inserts of the Neve for those clips I posted for Guitar and Bass. It's 2-Space but definitely affordable..

I too had an OG ART Pro MPA. I still have an Digital MPA GOLD that does run at proper voltages..

I recommend the HX-FX, worth a look; Line 6 just released the HX-One pedal that does one effect at a time. The Helix / HX delays are very good. IMO. I have an HX-Effects

$299.99
That pedal did not have a real purpose for me. The tones are OK but I'd prefer a specialized pedal that is amazing at one thing than OK at a number of things. Horses for courses but it was a big PASS for me on the new line 6. 1 effect at a time is a selling point to them but for this kind of pedal, seems like a negative to me.

I find the HX-Effects sounds great, allowed me to get rid of many pedals; I have specialized pedals for simple rigs (e.g., compressor, dirt + noise gate, noise gate, EQ).

Some Effects in the HX-FX take time to dial in.

I have several patches that capture various pedalboards: 60's psychedelic, 70s prog rock, '80s hair metal, fusion, prog metal, etc.

Sounds great, compact, versatile, convenient
