Floyds, top mount vs recessed.

Curious, as to what other people like better.

All the floyds I have had so far have been recessed, I tried playing with a friends Peavey Wolfgang and it felt different trying to get the feel of it really quick, and I just bought a Wolfgang Special and I am curious if this is a big deal for some people.

I voted recessed, because that's all I've played so far. Mainly wanted to see what everyone else has voted. Top mounted does seem cool, for ease of switching to drop D without too much hassle

Gotta be top mounted and dive-only. Recessed looks like shit, feels weird to me, and I don't like a floating bridge.

I didn’t notice the neck angle on my buddies Peavey but I could definitely tell a difference at the bridge height.

Top mounted. Hate floating. Tuning is easier, break a string and you are still in tune.

Peavey Wolfgang Standards have a slightly recessed route so the Floyd sits lower, but still on the body, to keep action lowered.

The PV WG Specials did not have the slight recess

I prefer top mounted standard 2 point trems over all I think now but love my Ibanez Lo Pro Edge, which is recessed. I haven't played many with a top mounted Floyd come to think of it, though I have seen them around. Dive only floyds/bridges do not interest me. There has to be some sort of upward movement available, or better to not have a floating bridge at all.

Yeah, the thing is, that Wolfgang set-up with a non-recessed Floyd that actually rests on the body is pretty rare, and I guess it came about for the D-tuna. Most non-recessed Floyds float above the body to some degree, and the recess originally just eliminated the need for a neck angle like, say, the old Jacksons had.

Top mount, whether sitting on the body or up off it with some room still to pull up, feel better to my right hand than recessed. I've tried many times over the years playing recessed, and I just can't play rhythm's the way I want.

Top mount is better for me but it does make neck angle a bit difficult sometimes.

I prefer top mount, decked or floating. As said above, it feels similar to a Gibson bridge.

I can play recessed of course, but I don't love it, just like I don't love the bridge feel of a Fender.

I prefer recessed and if I want it decked, I'll just use some stopper.

I don't like angled necks personally

You don’t necessarily have to have a more extreme neck angle for top mounted floyds, you can just as easily build the guitar with a shallower neck pocket.

I’m a hard tail guy so if I had to have a daily driver with a Floyd, it would be top mounted and decked. Plus, you can rock a d-tuna with that setup.

But a guitar with a recessed Floyd that goes both sharp and flat is basically a party machine so it just depends on what I’m doing.

Both are cool.

I've only played recessed, so I'll take that as a preference...I don't recall ever seeing or trying a top-mount.

Either depending on the neck angle/pocket. For me I just need to pull sharp a bit for vibrato.

I've had both at the same time and zero difference. In fact at one time my ESP Horizon (Jackson lawsuit headstock) was top mounted and my backup ESP Horizon was recessed. They felt the same.

I do believe that there is a tonal difference between decked and floating.

I don't think it matters to me. I've had some with the Floyd decked to the body and some recessed where the trem is flush with the body once set up.

If it's flush, I tend to rest my hand on the guitar body just above the bridge. If it's non recessed, I think I sit my hand on the bridge itself like what I do with a TuneOMatic.
