'88 probably the best year in Hard Rock!

Yeah...he was a shredder! Even in the video back in the day. I loved the video cuz it had the hottest chics in it, plus the drummer played with his drums on fire!

Mitch Perry played the two handed part of the solo, I believe.....

Cool clip. Saw these guys back in the day open for Rush on the Hold Your Fire tour. Mitch Perry was good but I would rather listen/watch Schenker play over the course of a show.

Hmmm, let's see:

Queensryche-Mindcrime
Metallica-AJFA
Megadeth-so far, so good...
Sepultura release that year maybe?...
Deftones and AIC formed right around that time

I'm probably forgetting some big ones, but I honestly can't think of any more that effected me as a listener, player (although I was born in '81 :D ) Fucking love Operation Mindcrime though!

I'd say a year in the early '90's sometime was the best time for rock guitar. Not talking about the lack of solos bs, but the good stuff.

1984...........Van Halen....thats when guitar rock started in my opinion.

1988 is considered one of the greatest benchmarks in recorded history, just take it from me

I hate the cheesy delay the sound guys used to put on the vocals back then. Schenker always has the best feel. I love the guys playing.

best?? wow. i think its the worst, especially with album productions, and the starting of the even worser for so called hard rock mainstream. kings x debut would be the only release out of your list that was unique, not trendy, and cool. MSG, that mass late 80's processed/produced stuff he did doesnt hold a candle to UFO and early MSG IMO. Play AC/DC back in Black or Judas Priest British steel.....thats 1980, and its as good as it gets IMO for straight ahead hard rock with no bull shit make up for that period. As much as i grew up with 80's music and loved it, everything hard rock mainstream post-85 i cant listen to much anymore.

Wow, that is pretty short sighted. I love old Priest and Ac/Dc, but that long list has some good music in it. For example, Helloween, that's not simple 3 or 4 chord blues.... ;) There is a lot going on in those songs...

only using those two names as an example. this list has glam metal ( which i was never a fan of), death metal and just cheesy release from bands i never considered. Van Halen of course always wrote quality music, so they are an exception and even Yngwie whom i love, Odyssey was my least favorite because of the commercial aspect and joe lynn turner's cheesy vocals. I loved fusion and prog music though, but wouldnt consider that hard rock. ur so metal Dave!

For Yngwie's Odyssey and Mindcrime, 1988 was a very good year.....

:rawk: I love this thread, my wife says I need come out of the 80's. The music from this decade can't be beat! :rawk:

mindcrime yes odyssey nope

that's right after ym's wreck, and his tone was way bright and hashy compared to his older stuff.

i do have 4 track demos laying around of that album though, prior to his crash, with my friend mark weitz singing and it was a totally different deal. mark should have been the signer instead of JLT. he sang for odin and americade and zachman's band third stone, back in the 80s club heyday. he sounded like coverdale, dio, soto, and ray gillan all wrapped up into one!

one of those dudes who never got his due--incredible voice.

Good stuff on there, but a ton of stinkers as well.

Here's something cool. Not for the hair/glam stuff, but a good source for the great metal stuff that came out through the years.

I know there are haters...that is fine...and I am first to admit NWOBHM was before this, but 3 words sum it up which no one has mentioned......
