Anyone have a BE Deluxe modded to make it meaner?

You can remove the "compliance" resistors in the clipping circuit (not sure if present in the Deluxe, but they're in the regular BE) and maybe swap the 2200pF bright cap for 4700pF. The compliance resistors are described in Keven O'Connor's "The Ultimate Tone" book series. Instant aggression and...

Anyone have a BE Deluxe modded to make it meaner?

As someone who builds amps specifically to be pissed off and angry, it's my opinion that Friedman amps are largely on the tame/polite side. That doesn't mean they sound bad. They sound good. But they aren't what many consider to be "aggressive". You can look at a schematic of his amps and...

Anyone have a BE Deluxe modded to make it meaner?

Easy enough to put that jumper on a switch too. A few other things to try. Just going by what I've seen in the regular BE (not the Deluxe:)) 1. Replace MPSA06 clippers with 2N5401 for a different flavor. 2. Replace the zeners with other values to taste. 3. Friedman uses "compliance" resistors...

Damn. You figured it out. Now I gotta go back to the drawing board. You weren't supposed to notice the drone. P.S. Nice undies

Anyone have a BE Deluxe modded to make it meaner?

If there's a schematic of this circuit, I can offer some suggestions to make it more aggressive/angry.

    A battle of the Larrys

Better? No. Different? yes. An XTC has its own thing going on. I wouldn't use an XTC to play the same type of music as one of these amps. Camerons are mostly hot-rodded Marshalls—either cascaded Marshall circuits with diode clipping or a plate-driven tone stack with 4 stages. They have their own...

    A battle of the Larrys

Nice. That gives me a better idea for how an amp actually sounds. I like the second amp in that clip more. The first one (Wizard?) has too much high-end treble (fizz) for my taste. But could just be a simple EQ tweak. Maybe too much presence. Both have some serious aggression though lol. I tend...

    Aristides guitars. Worth try??

Maybe I just don't have the ears lol. I've never noticed any of those sonic qualities with ANY guitar I've ever played. Most electric guitars sound about the same to me. Once you plug 'em into an amp with some gain and crank it up, most guitars' intrinsic sound qualities go away and you mostly...

    Aristides guitars. Worth try??

I ordered one from the factory a number of years ago but got rid of it fairly quickly. I preferred my Mayones Duvells. BTW... those multipiece necks on Mayos are awesome. You want a neck that is stable, straight, and strong. That's exactly what Duvells have. Tone? Hard to beat wenge, bubinga...

    A battle of the Larrys

The clips sound decent. I can tell the amps deliver, I just wish the speakers weren't G12T-75s and I also would prefer to hear a recording with something simple like a room mic or an iPhone. I know... blasphemy. But honestly... that helps me hear what amp actually sounds like better than close...

Where are all of the Cameron moded Marshalls?

Nah, it wasn't a customer's amp. It was a ground-up build in a project chassis. Quite obviously a prototyping amp, not meant for sale or actual use.

Where are all of the Cameron moded Marshalls?

I offered to buy it when I played it. He said no. About a year later I got a text from him asking if I still wanted it. I think he needed money at the time, but a few days later he changed his mind lol. It had a custom, one-off chassis; custom, one-off transformers; and V1 wasn't a typical 12AX7...
