Thinking of Purging

I have considered purging some gear as well. But definitely missed the boat as far as the market goes. It's a horrible time to sell right now. I'll just keep it until things start moving again in a couple years or so.
I've thought about it just to de-clutter and refocus on the stuff I use. More mental than anything. When I had my massive stockpile of stuff before I just kept going back to the same handful of things and felt better getting rid of a lot of items. Idk, maybe the solution is just get a gear house lol

Dude, gear house is basically everyones dream!

I have a decent size plot of land and have been working on a stand alone house on the property thats just gear and studio. I don't really use outboard gear much anymore, so I don't need tons of space, but just enough displacement to balance the room for listening through monitors reliably. The rest will be "live" room. So I am working on it!!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but 2023 is when it becomes a federal law for all people to follow the $600 rule for goods and services sales and not just certain locations/states. You’ll be marked a sole proprietor by the government so just be cognizant of paying income taxes on any profits and how to fill out a schedule C/schedule SE form. I sold my metroplex earlier this year and barely broke even after taxes, fees, etc. but will have to follow through with claiming the small net income since an auto generated 1099k is involved. I have no intention of skating taxes and it’s not the money that bothers me, just all of the extra bullshit I have to keep up with now.

Just a heads up that not only is the market garbage currently for offloading a lot of stuff, but tax laws are going to make selling personal hobby items a total bitch from this point on because we get labeled as a small business if you make a single dime and then have to go down the road of collecting paperwork to be able to schedule other costs so you don’t get your ass handed to you. This is because you’re taxed at whatever bracket you’re in with your full time job, not what bracket your “business” is since you’re not an LLC.

You are truly living the dream. I am glad to count you as my lawyer and most of all, friend.

Yep. I don't need to sell anything. However, I start to feel like a damn hoarder sometimes. Especially with building, modding, tuning amps. I never really play anything else because I'm so busy with those.

It’s a bottomless pit. It gets even more expensive with bench equipment to troubleshoot and design said amps. Im ready to wrap up my 74, just need an OT to match my PT and yank the originals for a rainy day project.

This is also a good time to discuss WHAT you buy. I have found that nobody cares about your custom guitar or amp or pedal.. a name and brand is where the value holds and stays. Buy brand name stuff. Doesn't have to be the best but if you ever sell it, at least there is a market for it and a going price. Like Edwards, epiphone, charvel pro mods etc... this stuff has a value people can look up and will want. I now only buy something that is a known brand.

As for purging screw that! I think I have bought 4 guitars during the pandemic. I can't play them all but they get about 20 min on them every week. They look cool. They make me feel good. They feed my need for western excess. I buy stuff now as my kids are taking more time and soon i won't have money to buy much when my kids are in sports and activities that suck your wallet dry. So in the words of the stock market: buy buy buy and hold. Then sell high ( if you can)

The only way this will continue to work is if people treat selling gear on line like they do a site like adult friendfinder. Secret meet ups and cash only exchanges like you are meeting an escort and can't discuss prices over email, only "donations". Besides that, I wonder if they will go after the kijiji/ craig lists of the world and impose their shenanigan tax there too? Then they will go after FB. Bull$hit taxman.

I feel fortunate that I got a new vessel in 2020, right after lockdown and cars were still ‘cheap’. But I just hit 90k cuz I drive so much for work (they pay for most of it). I hope it will last for a while.

Also, my Subaru Outback has emergency braking and auto cruise control, etc. That whole fucking system, every one of those features that uses a camera, goes thru a switch in gatdam gas cap! Twice the whole sys has failed. When I called service their first question was about the gas cap. Last week it failed again, I stopped and got gas. All good again. WTF?

Best to get rid of the stuff you're not using sooner than later. Expect price drops with the way the used market is heading.

As the economy gets harder more people will become desperate to sell gear for cash, making it a buyer's market again.
Couldn’t agree more. The economy is headed this way and it’s going to be a buyers market very soon. I pretty much purged the stuff in my collection that is easily and readily available.

Crazy. Found out that depending on the vehicle, full glass coverage is mostly a thing of the past. Apparently windshields in cars 2010 and newer are integrated systems....part of collision or comp only. Too damn expensive to be a throw in with insurance. Lol

This is why you hopefully sell to a forum member and do gift; or local. I'll hold out till I do vs going on Reverb/Ebay etc. Thankfully I have no need/desire to sell anything. Super happy with my gear.

I just keep them all in different tunings to justify the redundancy on the guitar side of things. Personally don't have but a few amps, but I suppose you could just turn the mids all to max on the redundant models, haha.

Two weeks after buying this Subaru…cracked windshield. They said it wasn’t covered but I put up a stink to corporate and they covered it. Two weeks after new windshield…cracked again. I let it get as bad as I could stand and replaced it. With all the scammy “camera calibrations” it’s about $500. No cameras are even attached to the windshield.

They have been making windshields thinner and thinner over the years and the whole camera calibration is sometimes a scam you can’t get around. If the person crashes they will sue based on uncalibrated cameras (and sometimes win even when cameras were not at fault). So nobody wants to do it without the calibration.
