Favorite Classic Hard Rock Tones

A diode clipping marshall style amp can nail all those tones...
Since you are an effects expert...
what modern equipment choices(post 95-no pedals) would you make to best effects for those tones...???

Honestly I think ampwise any decent Marshall with a boost/OD pedal in front, maybe a delay in the loop will fit the bill perfectly. JCM800, 4x12 with broken in Greenbacks, Tubescreamer, Boss delay. Add a guitar with hot(ter) pickups and you're all set.

Knowing your current gear and since this is rig talk, I would recommend a three amp w/d/w ultra stereo rig combining a Wizard/Soldano you name it, with a 76 JMP and a rack system (Ada MP1 and Bogner Fish and Mesa Triaxis as preamps). That would also work and be more fun GAS-wise. :)

As for further effects: After listening to those tracks: delay, chorus and a wah, maybe a compressor and EQ, should be all you need on a pedal board. Or any decent multi, i.e. Lexington, TC etc. unit will do.

classic choice!
i think my korg dl8000 delay and pcm 80 both fall within that era and could nail it!

What's up Pat?!

How about a JCM800, a Boss SD-1 and 40 years of not messing around with gear chasing and instead just playing our guitars, writing tunes and recording our music?
sage advice my friend!
i wish you had procured the fabled atomica before fate ripped it out of your grip. the chase for you would’ve probably ended there.

i always used to think that opening solo intro thingie matthias jabs played on bad boys running wild was so metallic and in your face in a cool way. it’s the present marshally tone and the bright short delay making that sound happen. maybe a cocked wah thing too?

racer x and nuno had that fiery cutting edge presence and both were toying with ada preamps and rumored to use old ampeg V4 cabs which i tool note of, because i had a vintage ampeg v4 half stack. those cabs were resonant!

i’ve always liked wizards even when they used to be pretty underground and not super popular with the high gain crowd.
a mix of eddie and nuno is my ideal hard rock tone target.

Yeah, sounds awesome. To me it sounds like a mix of reverb, chorus, and EQ, but studio effects added after recording. Scorpions always have great tones imho, but from what I know their setup has always been simple at the core (two Amps, mostly one 50w JMP, but also others like Wizards, Skydstrup, etc.). Check out these two videos:

(German, but you'll get the jist)

Nunos tone is mostly based on Marshalls and the MP1 on Pornograffity as far as I know. I met him at a clinic and a few others and myself tried to interest him in Diezel but he wouldn't bite. I guess he is a Marshall/ early Van Halen dude at the core and no matter what he plugs into, he sounds like Nuno ayways. I guess his Randall signature amp ist just for the money and looks.

I’m curious how that went.

“Hello arguably greatest current living rock guitarist. Have you considered changing the rigs that have made you a living for something suggested by some random guys? Surely we know better than you what works for you”

Especially when Diezels are nothing like what he has used.

For Eddie I wouldn’t recommend a Wizard. His tone has that fuzzy piwer anp thing that Wizards don’t do. At least mine doesn’t, thankfully 😁.
Nuno is, I dunno, one of those that just never interested me enough to pay attention to. Probably I was just into other things when they came out.

Remember to boost Marshall with pro co rat like Nuno does . That’s he gets that tight snap to the those open palm mutes

Totally easy going actually. He asked us if we'd recommend an amp he should check out and as it was, three out of the few people there were Diezel users. He smiled and shrugged it off. Totally good dude at that meeting, down to earth, interested, nice.

Plus: Nuno playing a VH4 would still sound like hin.

I've met him a few times, very nice guy. In terns of the Diezel; I think if Nuno plugged into channel 2 or 3 of the VH4, he'd probably appreciate it's characteristics. Channel 2 in particular would really highlight his percussive pick attack and nuanced approach to rhythm playing. You would think that these well known, seasoned players try everything out there, but it's not always the case. I lent my earlier VH4 to a studio out in the valley for a project in 2010 I believe, and Lynch had never even tried one. He was extremely impressed and ended up playing it a bunch. Sometimes I think because many of us here are gear addicts and tone chasers, we naturally believe that the players we appreciate think similarly. Truth is, many of them find what works, stick with it and focus on writing and playing. Then there are the Hetfields of the world that insist on trying everything once and have slowly drifted away from the go-to standards (Marshall and Mesa) and gravitated towards the high end boutiques (Diezel and Wizard) as their playing and tastes have evolved. It takes all kinds, and that keeps things interesting.
