Favorite Classic Hard Rock Tones

For Eddie I wouldn’t recommend a Wizard. His tone has that fuzzy piwer anp thing that Wizards don’t do. At least mine doesn’t, thankfully 😁.
Nuno is, I dunno, one of those that just never interested me enough to pay attention to. Probably I was just into other things when they came out.
the reason i never fan boi’ed on extreme was the singer. he and graham bonnett are just nails on a chalkboard to me.

Yeah, sounds awesome. To me it sounds like a mix of reverb, chorus, and EQ, but studio effects added after recording. Scorpions always have great tones imho, but from what I know their setup has always been simple at the core (two Amps, mostly one 50w JMP, but also others like Wizards, Skydstrup, etc.). Check out these two videos:

(German, but you'll get the jist)

Nunos tone is mostly based on Marshalls and the MP1 on Pornograffity as far as I know. I met him at a clinic and a few others and myself tried to interest him in Diezel but he wouldn't bite. I guess he is a Marshall/ early Van Halen dude at the core and no matter what he plugs into, he sounds like Nuno ayways. I guess his Randall signature amp ist just for the money and looks.

that backstage tour was cool!

I've met him a few times, very nice guy. In terns of the Diezel; I think if Nuno plugged into channel 2 or 3 of the VH4, he'd probably appreciate it's characteristics. Channel 2 in particular would really highlight his percussive pick attack and nuanced approach to rhythm playing. You would think that these well known, seasoned players try everything out there, but it's not always the case. I lent my earlier VH4 to a studio out in the valley for a project in 2010 I believe, and Lynch had never even tried one. He was extremely impressed and ended up playing it a bunch. Sometimes I think because many of us here are gear addicts and tone chasers, we naturally believe that the players we appreciate think similarly. Truth is, many of them find what works, stick with it and focus on writing and playing. Then there are the Hetfields of the world that insist on trying everything once and have slowly drifted away from the go-to standards (Marshall and Mesa) and gravitated towards the high end boutiques (Diezel and Wizard) as their playing and tastes have evolved. It takes all kinds, and that keeps things interesting.
i hung out with Peter a few times when he was developing the Herbert prototype. I’ve always liked that amp. the VH4 and Soldano SLO 100 were never my choice for high gain as they are very laser beam tight and only start to scream at high volume. i prefer more squish and give at any volume. i swear my mark III sounds amazing at speaking volume!

i hung out at NAMM with bruce egnater the year extreme reunited for the first time in like a decade and they just released nuno’s signature randall amp that he designed with nuno.
bruce kindly got vip passes for me and my son for the extreme concert and it was great. nuno has always been amazing and his tones are consistently killer imo.

Favorite hard rock classic tone is Zeppelins Heartbreaker for me.
great era. it’s hard to qualify classic hard rock because that could mean iron butterfly or stone temple pilots.
it’s why i posted the vids showcasing the tones and 80s-90s era i meant.

some others with the classic/metal tones i like:
