RESIDENT ROCK PROFESSOR
I always thought this was Eddie getting a more thrash vibe on his tone and riffs . This song just seems more “heavy metal “ than their typical rock n roll . I like this song though many hate Sammy I know

I dig the song but metal it is not.
They are not a heavy metal band.
The heaviest song imo is Atomic Punk.
To me the tone and main riff is metal . Just Sammy over it . Listen close and the riff is oddly built the same many metal riffs

Good song for van Hagar?

But not metal at all in my opinion ?

It's too "nice." Too major key. Just too easy to imagine it playing in my 70 year old moms suburu Forester. And she listens to some cool music tbh.

You can use major keys and still be metal: ask manni Schmidt and peavey Wagner

You can play at relaxed tempos and be metal - ask DC cooper

But you can't be "nice" like VH is in this track ? even when your mood isn't "aggressive" its got to be "contemplative" at the very least - Mike Scalzi is really great at being contemplative and still metal.

I know all the Vh superfans are gonna hate this, but this is not shitting on their music, it's explaining why it isn't "metal."

Woah that song is baaaaad. And not very metal-y.

I swear for a forum where everyone has granular, specific tastes in gear and tone

the actual music people listen to is the most basic bitch happy meal bullshit on earth
Cant disagree.
I admit, I can be pretty bland musically at times.

Eddie specifically influenced metal guitar no doubt. He certainly had quite a few chugging riffs that are reminiscent of metal music. But IMO he was just a heavy rock guitarist. Sometimes VERY heavy. But that is where it stops. A ton of bands got lumped into 'metal' in the 80's and it was embarrassing TBH. Don't get me started.

Nuno views Van Halen and Van Hagar the same way I do .

Nuno Bettencourt Compares David Lee Roth & Sammy Hagar Van Halen: That New Era Is a Whole Other Thing

The Extreme guitarist also said he's been thinking about organizing a Van Halen tribute of his own.

Nuno Bettencourt said he preferred Van Halen's original David Lee Roth era to the one featuring Sammy Hagar, saying how he'd love to take part in a Van Halen tribute show of sorts.

Following the overwhelmingly positive response to "Rise", the lead single taken from Extreme's recent comeback album "Six", Nuno noted how he was allegedly being touted as the "heir to the throne" of Eddie Van Halen, which he went on to categorically dismiss. "I have to say that while that is gratifying, there is no heir to the throne of Eddie Van Halen. Nobody sits on that throne", Nuno said, explaining that a player like Edward exists in a category of one.

Of course, that's not preventing anyone from paying homage to the late guitar hero, and Nuno tells "May The Rock Be With You" in a recent interview how he's been tinkering with just such an idea. And while he says he'd love to take part in Alex Van Halen's failed tribute event should it ever materialize, the guitarist admits that chances for such a thing are slim. He said (transcription via Rock Celebrities):

"I had this f*cking crazy moment that I was like 'All right, I gotta do some sort of Van Halen tribute.' Like, I want to put a band together. Of course, it'd be great with Alex [Van Halen] and Michael [Anthony] but I know that's never going to happen.

"At one point, people were saying 'Hey, I think they're going to reach out to you to possibly do some sort of thing.' And I'm like 'Okay, well, I'm here.' I doubt that phone's gonna ring."
Reflecting on Van Halen's legacy, Nuno admits that he's a fan of the classic lineup, first and foremost:

"I actually put together a musicians list, I went through every Van Halen album... And I apologize for saying this to anybody that's gonna get offended, but going through the Dave era for me... Because Sammy's a great friend of mine as well; that new era Van Halen is a whole other thing — which by the way I was obsessed with and listened to it — but as a player and as a kid, the Dave era is in my f*cking bloodstream.

"That's the difference. I was listening to other stuff, where[as] that other sh*t raised me as a kid."

At the time Unchained was one of the heaviest songs ever written.
Welcome to Rig-Talk
Can't really argue too much.
Relative I suppose.
As mentioned already, there were some prior VH songs that were pretty heavy IMO.
Just not heavy metal per say.
That said, I'd say Black Sabbath had them beat as well as LZ Immigrant Song. Edit: Some songs from KISS and Iron Butterfly
But yeah, Unchained was one of the heaviest at that point.
Edit: I'm sure there were other examples.
