I heard this quote the other day & it made me laugh. SO true. What was a great piece of gear that you LOVED, until you compared it to something else that made you want to move it? I wouldn't even know where to begin..

I'll start with this one though. The 6V6 Splawn Super Sport through a V30 cab blew me away- till I A/Bd it with a Triple Rectifier, then moved it. In hindsight at 20W it was really a different tool than a 150W amp and I should have kept it.

I only sold a big half stack and got combo amps for practical reasons of gigging. How could I be dissatisfied with a big Marshall? You can't really be but I HAD to have more ease of transport for downtown gigs. I've had more than a few pedals where I got another pedal that was better so I just sold what I wasn't using. Same with guitars. I've never tried anything and immediately decided on the spot I must sell what I currently have to obtain it.

The thing about comparisons with something you have vs something you want is that they're almost never fair, because the thing you want will always have the advantage of novelty.

Depends on what gear you own currently when you sample the new gear. If you have mediocre junk to begin with, that might be different. As they say "luxuries once sampled become necessities".

I have never wanted another wiener as much as mine…. ?

On a real note: I believe it’s important to personally play and hear them all. Then you know. The key is never to sell anything. Then there are no regerts.

Kind of along those lines, “if you want a Marshall, get a Marshall” rang true with me.

I went through a slew of amps, including many boutiques, before settling on a Marshall. When I finally got it, it was like, “that’s it.”

I probably would’ve been just fine sticking with my first real amp, a Peavey 5150 combo, though.

Never happened to me, because I have nothing to compare with lol

Except for those cases where things (amps/pedals/guitars/tubes/etc) are pumped up on forums (especially) and then you play said thing and you're like "WTF - I don't get it" :dunno:

Speaking of 6V6 20W amps, I absolutely love my Splawn 6V6 Quickrod 20W head. When I got the 20 watter, I got rid of my 100W QR and never looked back. I actually plugged in several of my amp heads the other day for the first time in a long time (been using a little SS Line 6 Spider combo to putz around on), thinking that I might try to offload what didn't impress me but so far I haven't been able to bring myself to get rid of anything. I've got a PRS Sonzera 50 head that would be the first to go though if it came down to it. That being said, I've been on a "hand wired" kick here lately, and I'd love to try either a Roccaforte 40 or a Reeves Super 78. So, if one of those came along I might get more serious about dumping something else. The Splawn will definitely be staying though.

About as far as I go is comparing dirt pedals.....all my amps are completely different from one another

Mine too for the most part. It’s like that rate your amps thread, it’s hard for me to do cause it really just depends on the day and what I feel like playing. My Laney is not my favorite amp of the bunch, but on those occasional days I’m in a sludgier mood where it excels at it is my favorite amp.

If you fancy 6v6 amps and you haven't, try a Wizard MC25.

The addiction is real...gambling, sex, booze, dope, tobacco...Amps are no different for me...the ultimate addiction, but much healthier, as long as your relationship with you're significant other and finances can handle it...LOL!

Yup.

The grass is almost always greener on the other side, so probably best to minimise gaze-time.

I had a lot of fun though from ‘06 to ‘11 flipping and trying out a ton of stuff. Once I figured out what I liked tone wise I started to finally settle on purchases and now couldn’t imagine flipping amps anymore, especially these days.

With that said, I’ve compared and flipped a Mesa rectifier 4 times before finally settling on my 5th one I’ve currently owned for years and appreciating it for what is and what I love about it rather than expecting it to be the perfect jack of all trades amp it was never set out to be.
