I just got a Frankie relic & although the guitar plays well, the Wolfgang PU is about as un-brown & un-VH sounding as can be.
It's thick, compressed & boomy.
I was thinking on a SD 78 but that's the original fender trem EVH white stripped guitar & it may be too low powered for a later day red Frankie sound.
Any suggestions?

Those pickups sound pretty good in those guitars. I tried an EVH brand Frankenstein pickup and a couple of others and liked the original the best.

Maybe a Pariah Pasadena Black? That does a pretty good job of getting the later VH tones. Or a Duncan Custom Custom?

The EVH Frankenstein is a great pickup.

I’m going to try Scottosan’s 1984 pickup soon in my Charvel. That may be a good option.

Has anyone put an SD 78 into their super strat? Just curious what it sounds like in a floyd equipped guitar.
Also, does anyone know what was in Ed's 1984 Frankie?
I love his tone on that almost as the 1st VH album.

Broken JB. I had a Duncan '59 in an Ibanez rg550 once. I wasn't going for the VH tone, but that pup did it better than any other I've ever had.

Pariah Pasadena white or as mentioned a Mighty Mite 1400 .

Jalen FW nails the Fair Warning tone but it also sounds great for other VH stuff . Checkout PLX'S sound cloud recordings , outstanding VH guitar tones. His version of "Feel your love tonight" sounds dead on to the first albums tone.

:ROFLMAO: I wondered why that one charted better on SoundClick.

I actually thought SGMAD was better.

Thanks Al.
Do you think the Origin is more like the open PAF sound of the early VH album & the Pinnacle is the later Van Hagar / Wolfgang type sound?
The Origin is a little more open for sure and covers pretty much all the early VH, I would recommend the Pinnacle for a lower gain amp

I originally thought alot of this was the basswood body, I then heard one in an Alder custom shop fender

It was thick compressed and boomy with Alder.

Now through tthe same amp is my 1984/A2 in an alder Charvel

A super distortion will absolutely nail the early brown sound, especially wired straight with just a volume.
It cleans up really well too, hits that edge Evh had all over the first album
