Metallica 2000 : ugly rectifier tone

If I remember right this was a theme and there were a couple other "everyones running" music videos

Just everything about it is so cringe
Yup that was my thought. "Running!?!? Again??!!!"

Though to be fair if I found out I was in Metallica I'd start running too.

Never respected this song. Weak af writing and tones. It was a true low-bar effort.
I've never understood James' attitude towards 'Escape' and their principled refusal to play it because they felt dirty because it was consciously written to garner radio play, yet they happily embrace this 'pick me' song they wrote just for the movie money.
Granted, when writing all their albums there is always an element of creating a product/art for sale, but this song was just a low effort, boring ass riff, blatant cash grab. This and 'We did it Again' can die in a fire with Hammett's 'Portals'.

I've always really liked Escape. Despite it's short length it's got two key changes and to me is 1000x heavier than anything off the Black Album

What are you talking about? It's a sound effect they chose to add, not an actual record scratching
You talking about where in master the slowed down and sped up the song ? It’s mastering effect

I just can't get into it man. I've always thought the guitar tones on it are weedy and thin sounding, and the mix clipping is constant and awful.
The songs are great . Vocals meh but there’s some very and justice type song structures . Like all nightmare long

Dude escape is the shit
The chorus lyrics are exactly how I felt

There are some cool riffs in there I'll give you that. But everything around those riffs is just kinda bad. You're right about James' vocals, they're all wrong. Actually It feels like his vocals on the last three albums are all mixed to sound like the dude is in a karaoke bar. The singing sits way too high in the mix and it feels like not a thing has been done to them production-wise so they're just kinda direct and flat sounding.

For all Bob Rock's faults, the band has never found anybody even in the same league as him to produce their music since he left. I dunno, I feel like Metallica's pure metal days are behind them and they'd do a lot better as a band now if they kept going in a Load / Garage Inc direction. It's probably an unpopular opinion but I think the best they're going to do from here on out is as a Heavy Rock band. They're definitely better at Heavy Rock than Thrash these days at least.

The songs literally sound like the bridge between Justice and Black that never happened. In fact it's closer to Justice than Black.

I could see where people would say that but to me, Justice had some real sophistication, complexity, and melody behind its best parts, but when the newer stuff tries to do similar things, everything just comes out clunky and amateur sounding, like riffs you'd hear random dudes coming up with at Guitar Center or something.

Partial disagreement. I think guitar wise, James was very on point for Death Magnetic but the production and Lars/Kirk's performances brought the overall proceedings way down. Imagine some of those DM riffs with 80's tones and Lars/Kirk playing at their peak 80's levels. Lots of the songs had very cool unconventional arrangement ideas that were hugely disserviced by Lars's seemingly absolute refusal to play fills on the toms anymore. But after that album, yeah even James lost the plot lol

As did Simmons Drums in the 80s and distorted vocals in the early 90s. Awful, awful trends. And don’t get me started on movie dialog samples in songs
😂 I was going to post some old band demo’s from the 90’s but I can’t now as they have movie samples in them.

I read they said they used the Rectos they used live in the studio ( sounds like they forgot to boost them According to Kirk .
.
In the verses James sounds like the fat Albert motif lol fr .
I like the Digitec Space station on the chorus .

James is in his serious bro dude mode on this one.

I always thought this sounded like a Triaxis setup with no custom eq to me.
