Love Bolt Thrower. So many groovy and heavy riffs.
I remember a guy at school was somehow related to one of the guys in the band, cousin of a cousin or something, idfk, either way he caught up with them on the Aus tour back in 93. That was pretty big aura stuff back in high school. He also got some free stuff from them being with Earache and he gave me the Carcass Symphonies tape and that seeded my love for Carcass ever since.
He was a drummer and I was just starting out on guitar so we'd jam out on the intro's to 'World Eater', 'Through the Eye of Terror' and 'Eternal War' until I lost where the fuck I was up to and trail off and he'd just love to practice doing crazy fills and shit over the top. I recall that and Sepultura's 'Desperate Cry' a lot, he'd love to do Iggor's fluttering hand style thingy that I thought was cool af. Simple times but my first chance to play with a real drummer and not along to a cassette and actually lock into a groove with a human. Feel the connection. Simple enough riffs to figure out and jam with. Rig Rundown?...Peavey Bandit and a shitty Kramer 610 (reverse headstock for extra coolness), god awful stock pickups, maybe a HM2 pedal that I didn't know how to use properly anyway.
He was a great drummer and some other kids in the area used to have a killer Ozzy cover band called 'Crazy Babies' back in high school around 92. They were barely old enough to get into the pubs in town to be able play the gigs. They even did a gig at school lunchtime under a different name and mostly more general HR tunes like Crue, Ozzy, Steppenwolf, The Angels etc... I don't know how they talked the teachers into allowing it, but it was a pivotal day for me wanting to learn guitar. Seeing kids my age absolutely rocking out at 100+dB in the school hall. Good times.
Don't know what became to him after school really, he I think he got Yoko'd by some chick and stopped playing so much and hanging out with his mates. He had potential for greatness. RIP Independent Brad.
Thanks for listening to my trip down memory lane
'For Victory' is perhaps my fave for tones, riffs and production.
