How much do newer Gibson SG's with repaired headstocks go for?

I've got a 2023 Gibson SG Standard '61.. Like all great Gibsons, it had a headstock break. It's been repaired, but I'm just not an SG guy. It doesn't help that this is the third SG headstock break I've fixed in the past month alone. One SG I just fixed was on it's 3rd headstock break.. The finish on this one is smoothed out and you can't feel it. Headstock veneer is obviously cracked, but I'm not going to touch any of it up, not going to hide it. I don't like to get too invasive with these things.

They go for $2k new. Is $1000 too much? Too little?

IDK, for comparison, I purchased a new SG '61 Standard late last year, list price was $1,999.00; all in, after 10% discount, including taxes, free shipping, etc., it was $1925.04 shipped.

I may not be the right person to respond since I usually by new, pristine guitars; preferably in their unopened factory sealed boxes when I can. I only buy used if they're mint or like new, or discontinued models no longer made., and only if they're stock. I don't buy repaired or owner "upgraded" guitars.

Feel that around $1k isn't totally off of the mark, but when I personally price things for sale I try and balance what I would pay for it into the equation. Gibsons are mostly easy sells, and headstock breaks aren't always unless it's a vintage/rarer model, ime. You may find it easier to trade for something like another lower tier Gibson (say a LP studio, special, etc..) or Fender in the same price range and sell that instead if you find yourself having a difficult time selling it. 🤷‍♀️

Its a better guitar now (y)

i'm not sure if i agree with that whole thing about it being a better guitar after a repair. it certainly isn't more valuable. no its SIGNIFICANTLY less valuable. makes for a better deal, that would be the only reason to buy a headstock repaired guitar.

i got an 01 lp custom for 1100 in 2004 because guitar center took it in used, and i pointed out to the guy who took it in, that it had an ALMOST flawless headstock repair. they were fast to whore it out to me at what they took it in at. most people don't want a "repaired" gibons. its stigmatized.

Id say about $800 give or take.
Good condition, without break, Id say $1200.

Out of the six I have owned and sold, one buyer just listed one of mine just south of me in Penn Yan, NY.
Beautiful 2014 burst, 61 style, slim taper neck, excellent condition down to $950.
I paid $700 in Canadaigua, NY Lowes parking lot.

$700 was my first thought.
I said $800 to be kind.

Yeah, it looks like an awesome guitar, and i'm sure it plays and sounds great - that isn't the issue here though. I'd rock the shit out of it.

The problem is simply the resale value. part of the reason people buy gibsons is that they KNOW they will get their money back out of it, if they ever need to.

And the headstock break means that it's going to be quite a bit more difficult to do that.

He might be able to con guitar center into giving him more in trade-in? if theres a teenager working at the counter? I dunno.

But that great resale value is part of why gibsons are so expensive in the first place, and headstock breaks take a giant hit into that, and as awesome as i'm sure the guitar is, i would honestly laugh at a grand for it :dunno: Maybe someone else would take it? Not me tho

If I was the owner, I would just keep it and rock the shit out of like Dan said. But I get it you're not a SG guy (y)

Kirks "greenie" I believe has had 4 headstock repairs.

My ‘76 SG Special has a repaired headstock crack. Never bothered to try to hide it. It’s never going to be for sale. By me anyway. It was the old man’s. He gave it to me for my 13th birthday.

That's so awesome. I love old SGs. I've been hoping to find an old melody maker in pelham or inverness for a long time, but they're always way too expensive for what they are.

I threw it up for $850 local. Someone already lowballed me at $350. I told him $700 and it's his. Hoping folks will just shoot me an offer at $700 and take it off my hands. Previous owner didn't want a broken/repaired Gibson so I got it cheap because I could do the work. Even if I fixed the front veneer and filled in the cracks, I don't think I'd see more than $800 for it.

I get the whole not wanting a broken/repaired Gibson. If this were a Les Paul I'd probably keep it. This thing just sits funny in my lap. I had a Les Paul Studio that I did a headstock repair on. I sanded down the neck and did an oil/wax finish. Bare Knuckle pickups, hipshot tuners, new wiring. I'd love to find it again. Sold it for $500 ☠️

Cool man!!

Yeah, I bet you can get 700 bucks for it. You might have to keep it posted up for a bit, or you might get lucky and get a bite quickly, but that seems like a fair price.
