Why do you have so many guitars?

Honestly the "closet classic" type guitars are so rare that younger folks think they are a myth now :hys:

The boomers found them all, collected em all, and they are all collecting dust

Also, you've gotta try one of these Airis NAO boosts Lisa, this thing is right up your alley I would assume - super tight, modern, aggressive

Is this that one you got for your birthday?

Yes! Plus it's purple.

Those U series BCR's are/were fucking amazing $ to radness ratio guitars, but they are starting to swell in price just like the handmade stuff.

I'm just taking umbrage with VBF comparing amazing masterbuilt craftsmanship like a shishkov era Hamer or early Dean Zelinsky or an early BCR to a mass produced fender strat or gibson from the 50s/60s. As far as playability it literally isn't even remotely close and anyone whos handled both would know that.

There certainly are some amazing vintage strats and LPs out there but they were mass produced, and there's a lot of duds too. The price to dud ratio between those two categories isn't even remotely comparable.

That's like comparing a ford mustang (which, totally badass btw) to a Ferrari F40
The only BCR guitars I've ever played was back in the 80s and damn were they all heavy as hell. Now back then we didn't give a shit either. And yeah they were all well made. What models/years in particular should one keep their eye out for? So many I see are modern ones made in Indonesia or Korea

Basically any USA made BCR is going to be amazing, but especially the late 70s early 80s ones. As Lisa mentioned, some of the Japanese ones are killer too, especially the "u" series.

If you can find a warlock, eagle, mockingbird, or stealth, from those eras/makes they are absolutely killer guitars.

Do you actually use them regularly?
Do you only use few of them and simply admire the look of the rest of them?
Something else: what?
A question I ask myself often.
Not just about guitars, but amps and pedals, too.
It all comes down to:
I've been exploring/flipping gear for about 2 decades. I found what works for me. All the gear I grab now is top-tier, and is a lot more difficult to flip. They all have some different to offer, and are all great.
I cycle thru most of the amps and guitars.
I know I could be happy with just a few guitars and an amp, the GZ modded Friedman SS100 for instance.
But then I play a different guitar, amp or pedal, and I could easily get by with just those.
So the trouble is, how to choose which ones to sell, when they're all keepers?

For me it is because I like to role play. Got the scalloped Fender to play Yngwie, a cream Edwards to play Randy, a Black/White Edwards V to play Schenker, Snakeskin pro mod to play DeMartinni, another strat to play Norum, Explorer to play Jabs, then a few randos.

I'm currently at 5. 4 Electrics and 1 acoustic.

The idea being that I generally am playing in either E or Eb, and if gigging I can have one and a backup in each tuning.

I think you can credibly justify multiple guitars to play different genres and alternate tunings. But at the end of the day, I keep going back to the same one or two that "feel" the best and allow my fingers to do what's in my head - no matter if it's blues or metal. The others are eye candy on the wall waiting for their turn to be sold.

To be perfectly honest, one of my favorites was my first - a Kamer Focus 2000 from the '80s. Still have it, with the original Floyd and SD JB, beat to hell and worth a fraction of the others. Now if could just get my old Peavy Bandit back, I'd be set 😉

when I started playing I was an 18-year old dumbass with no money and had to build my first guitar myself. It was a crappy guitar, but I gigged with it for a number of years and I still have it to this day. Now almost 40 years later I can afford to buy what I want and make up for all these years and now distant memories. Did it make me happy? You bet.

i am guilty;)
30+

3 classical accoustics. 1 beat up, 2 good ones. all gigged. could sell one, but can not decide which one.
1 steel string accoustic. could use a better one.
6 LPs. all drastically different + different PUs + tunings. all get played (tunings 2xD, 2xEb, 2xE).
2 SGs. all get played.
2 Strats. all get played, one not by me though.
1 superstrat.
10 Teles. 2 ash ones (very differnt). 8 alder ones. from vintage output to BKP CobraT for the bridge and strat necks, firebird, filtertron necks. differnt tunings. most selfmade. will sell some down the road
1 explorer (selfmade). need more! (tuned to #c)
1 iceman. (tuned to c)
1 7 string. need more! tuned to A
2 gretsch (1 selfmade , one semi hollow jazz box).
1 bass

except for the tels style ones, doesn't seem too many, does it?
i have a handful with fresh strings, so they get played with the amp. this rotates.
The old strings ones get used for practicing or collecting dust until they get picked up again.
If i don't pick up one for over a year, i think about selling...
