Trying to make 4/4 sound like 6/8

You ever stumble upon a familiar song on the radio for example, and the arbitrary moment when you tune in just happens to land on the offbeat? It throws the whole thing off and a few measures need to go by for your ear to catch the one again?

Yep, absolutely. It happens with skank/pogo beats in thrash sometimes, too.

A songwriter I cant think of right now once said he got cool ideas from hearing music in the background like at a mall where you cant hear it well enough to hear the one.

I love moments like that because it's like hearing a new song. The problem is, it never lasts long once your ear recognizes the down beat.
