you want to live after TEOTWAWKI....have a lot of salt on hand as well as access to water. and boomsticks...with ammo. Old school black powder is a good option because of casting bullets and possibly making powder.

Good advice, especially the salt in a no refrigeration long term situation. I would add people always forget dental floss and toothpaste....your teeth don't last long if you aren't taking good care of them. One bad tooth and you're done. Plus floss can be good cordage in a pinch. I like that big fat walgreens brand kind. Tough stuff.

that's how my grandparents and great grandparents lived. Salt cure or brine everything. Smoking hams and such as well. Most stuff grown was to feed animals that you ate. Root cellars and smoke house. Cut ice blocks in the winter and pack in salt and sawdust in the cellar. Amish still do this. salt pickling with brine. Easy to do...just add salt till a raw uncracked egg floats and your good. Just make sure to put something to keep whatever submerged or it will rot. Can everything. Veggies, meat....shit way to live but doable. Hell we did not have running water till I was 13. Had an outhouse down below the house. Learned quick to adapt in the cold months or at night. 5 gal bucket with a lid. Then you got a toilet seat to put on it. Try to sit on a bucket and shit and you will see why we bought a seat for it. Dump it in the morning if used. Also a bag of lime in the outhouse for the summer months. Gets pretty rank when trying to use it. We heated the bathwater on the stove and shared it. Just how it was.

Just found some cool shit that might be relevant to some in this thread. It's paracord, but inside are 7 strands. Some cotton, one filament ( thik fishing line) and one red waxed jute strand for fire starting. I just tried it out back with a ferro rod. Worked really well. I think I paid $11 for 100' of it. Weaved some of it through the eyelets on the sheath for my newest fixed blade. The sheath also has a little sleeve for a ferro rod.

Maybe not much of a consideration for "Bugout", but definitely something to throw in a get home bag.

I like it.

I'll add it to my OP along with 1/2 ton of salt. I would think if you salt, smoke, brine something correctly and stick in a lockbox in a cave it will last a very long time.

It's good info. I will say not all paracord is equal. Premium paracord will outlast the cheap knock off stuff by about 3x in terms of usability. Quality paracord lashings are good for probably 7-10 years of high strength lashing before the material is sun compromised. The cheap stuff is good for maybe 2 or 3 years before it gets hard and unworkable.

I have what for me is probably a lifetime supply of really good paracord. This paracord is definitely not that. The only draw for this stuff is the firestarter and the fishing line. I wouldn't use it for typical paracord activities other than in an emergency situation.

Just saw this somewhere else and thought it was relevant. I like the whisky and antibiotics part for sure.

"So my opinion it depends on why you need the cash. So to me there are 4 main types of emergency situations.

Basic natural disasters
Human related, government
Illnesses or pandemic events
Larger natural or unexpected

Also most have short term effects but no long term. The larger ones like asteroids, killer pandemics, nuclear wars etc would be full blown disasters for long term effects vs short term disasters.
For short term disasters or weather conditions $2,000-$5,000 should be fine for gas, food or medicine. Anything more than that would be better spent on supplies vs cash.

Long term events cash would basically be worthless after a few months. You would be better off investing in gold coins or gems but you would still need a buyer so in a real world scenario whiskey, medicine, antibiotics, ammo would all be worth more than cash. It also depends if resources are scared or abundant. Food and water could be worth more than cash. So long term food storage and water purification tablets could be worth more than cash or gold. Just depends. If you have it $50,000 or $100,000 could be enough to get you out of a country if that’s possible so who knows."

Floyd - where did you get your paracord?

Which paracord ? The stuff with the fire starter and fishing line I got off Amazon.

I have a cabin I rent from a friend that has 5 or 6 fresh water springs of varying sizes nearby. One spring is right next to my cabin so for now, I pump water our of the spring into a 55 gallon drum in a tree and then gravity feed my sink/shower. I've water tested it many times and it is clearer than the stuff at home. Those springs then feed into our 'spring creek' that then feed into a larger river system close by that has abundant smallmouth bass, rock bass, gar?, and some catfish, trout, and an occasional perch. I have about 2-3 years worth of bait and tackle. I have 6 or 7 fishing rods along with spare parts, line, hooks, etc.. I'm also fairly proficient at catching crawfish (crawdads we call 'em). My neighbor has an extensive garden with more vegetables and herbs than we could ever eat in a season. She often tries to give it away in town or at church whatever. I have maybe 2 years of .22 and 9m ammo but admittedly, I'd like to double that stash if not triple. I have lots of knives and other tools but need more experience in foraging/hunting. I mean, I could kill and skin a squirrel, turkey or deer (which are plentiful) - I'm just rusty from not doing it much.

Need still:

  1. Shotgun/more ammo - 9 and 22
  2. Rain water cistern
  3. A way to store extra gasoline
  4. Solar panel farm to regenerate my extensive Ryobi tool/battery shit + battery farm + breakers + cabling
  5. More foraging/hunting time
  6. x chainsaws/chains/oils
  7. dual fuel generator
  8. Dehydrated foods
  9. more canned food
  10. extra jeans, boots, tarps, lighters, batteries, flint, coolers, sleeping bags, knives, blankets, foil, tin pans, fire logs, tiki and 2:1 and 5:1 gas, extra pots, vinegar, charcoal and fluid, tents, towels, acoustic guitar, battery packs, back packs, more canned food, extra can openers, sling shots, jackets, bug out bags, all portable water, sun screen, tooth brush/paste, soap, dish soap, mouse traps/bait, car jack, tire jack, jumper cables, ratchet straps, rope, chains, carabiners, coffee, filters, sugar, stevia, spices, cooking oil, left over fishing gear/bait, hats, porn, whiskey, bourbons, pipes, left over week, chips, pasta, whatever frozen foods I can save. Not necessarily in that order.

Upvote on “chips”.
