High-pitched fizz from multiple amps... is this normal?

It may be magnetostriction, which is a normal noise caused by the vibration that occurs in an output transformer due to the magnetic field produced by the signal. Normally you don't hear it because the speaker volume masks it, but when playing into a silent load it becomes audible.

    PI grid leak resistor values

Note that we are talking about two very different things here, balance in normal operation, which is designing the circuit for equal amplitude signals on the two outputs when the PI is npt overdriven, and duty-cycle balance when the PI is overdriven, to prevent asymmetrical drive to the output...

    PI grid leak resistor values

It reduces the amount of duty-cycle modulation that occurs when overdriving the phase inverter. Typically, values in the range of 330k to 390k give the best results, but 470k may be enough. It will not affect the normal, non-overdriven PI balance of the two sides. Duty-cycle modulation...

Guitar Amps and cold temperature, need advice

High altitudes are also bad for electrolytic capacitors. They can fail if transported in unpressurized cargo holds, or if they are used in certain avionics equipment where they are subject to high altitudes. There are special hermetically sealed bulk capacitors that are used in military aircraft.

Guitar Amps and cold temperature, need advice

Tube amps have built-in heaters. Not only do they sound great, they keep you warm and toasty all winter long. Modeling amps, on the other hand, not only sound cold and lifeless, they don't care if you freeze to death. All kidding aside... Most electrolytic capacitors are rated in the -40C...

Cracking noise on a Diezel VH4

One thing to note: just because a tube is microphonic doesn't necessarily mean you have to throw it away. Microphonic tubes can sometimes live long and productive lives in other tube positions, most notably, in the phase inverter. You can try swapping tubes around to find the worst and...

Mod in 2203 - what is this??

It's not a great loop. It has a buffered send, but no buffered return. The signal is high-level coming off the cathode follower, so it will be too hot for pedals, but might be okay for line-level rack unit. Since it doesn't have a buffered return amplifier, the drive to the output will be...

Mod in 2203 - what is this??

A TRS effects loop allows use of a standard TRS insert cable that has a 1/4" stereo jack on one end and two 1/4" mono jacks on the other end. It saves one cable. I used single-jack TRS insert FX loops on my Sabre and Intruder amps because I hated having to run two cables for each loop...

Mod in 2203 - what is this??

It looks like a TRS insert loop/preamp out to me. The electrolytic capacitor is for DC blocking of the high-voltage on the cathode. It is a large value so there is no low-frequency rolloff when driving a low-impedance (10k-100k). The cathode follower output signal goes to the tip, the return...

Is volume fluxuation typically a preamp tube?

Dirty contacts on an effects loop jack can cause volume fluctuations. This can be tested by plugging a cable between send and return.

Who owns the most expensive amp on Rig Talk?

You don't know expensive until you try to start your own amp company. I'm sure I have the most expensive amp in the world sitting on my bench gathering dust. The best way to make a million dollars? Start with two million and open an amp company.

    Sweetwater has been bought out.

If the new bean counters stop sending Atomic Fireballs with my orders to improve the bottom line, they're dead to me.

Is a Fender Tele anything to get excited about ?

My Tele is orange with cream binding and a strat-style beveled back. It started rocking when I routed it out for two humbuckers.
