Gotcha. Maybe that’s it.
I replaced the entire preamp section with Shuguang 12AX7Bs, and I immediately heard that top-end sizzle and aggression I was familiar with. It’s a big improvement over the JJ preamp tubes.
Very much so. Crank the Depth knob and turn it to Uber, Fat, and/or Doom settings and it sounds just like the original Uberschall with the massive low end. This thing can get essentially any tone with enough experimentation.
After playing around with it some more, I realized that a lot of the higher end I was getting from my Rev 2 was from my Boss SD-1 as a boost. Using the Fat, Uber, and Doom modes with the SD-1 yielded that high end I was familiar with. It sounds really, really good with a boost and the right...
Yep, turning down the FX Loop level worked wonders. It's interesting because my Twin Jet's FX loop knob had no effect whatsoever unless the FX loop was engaged.
Finally got my Uber Ultra. It’s gonna take me a looong time to explore all the options, but I’ll say this:
-It seems to be more mid-focused than earlier Uberschalls, with less high end on tap. That may be because of the JJ preamp tubes it came with. I’ll have to try some Shuguangs in it and see...
Believe it or not, one of the bolts holding the transformer in place actually sheared off in shipping. Whatever shock did that must’ve been pretty impressive. Even more impressive is that nothing else was broken. I managed to find a similar bolt at Home Depot and replaced it yesterday.
I haven’t gotten a chance to crank it yet (newborn baby puts a crimp in my playing time). From what I’ve seen so far, it’s voiced with a lot more mids than the Rev 2, which is generally more scooped and darker. Putting both in a mix would sound amazing.
