So if we wanted to do something like this- either a collab or a compliation- someone would have to take the project on. I'd throw my name in the hat for a compilation effort.

I'd be interested in selling or trading my very clean 1990 Mark III+ green stripe long head (all pentode) that's been modded & serviced by Mike B. Having had 9 of them I will say with confidence this amp is as good as IIIs get. I'd put the value on this amp with the III+ mod & factory...
This is pretty contentious. I always have Mike recap since I gig my amps & need them to be 100% reliable. Collectors may or may not prefer all original, but when caps do fail they can make a me$$. I figure good caps get you 20-25 years, and more is certanly possible but on borrowed time. Kind...
Purples are generally the least sought after III (splitting hairs really). I'd say $2000-2500 really depending on condition and service history, as you can take any of the chassis and convert to a head / rack / combo easily.
One was a Line 6 stompy board thing into the clean channel of my Triple Recto. It was more aggressive in the mix than the red channel.
One was a Blackstar tube powered distortion pedal into the clean channel of my Mark IVb. As much as it hurt my feelings it sat way better in the band mix than...
There have been a few times where I have used another musician's pedal into the clean channel of one of my high end amps and gotten a better tone - in the context of the live band- than any of my fancy amps were able to provide straight in. Unfortunately for my wallet my ego keeps me from using...
I've played the 100, 30 & the pedal, and I think the pedal does a pretty good job. It is colored by the amp you're running it through so there is that, but for the price it's worth checking out.
Never played a Hiwatt. I've played a pair of OG JMP 1959s but they were MV modded. That said I did crank them and didn't find them any louder than any other good 100W amp. IMO Marshalls have the perception of insane loudness compared to other 100W amps mostly from where the upper mids sit (in a...
From a different perspective, I think a lot of it may have to do with the fact that the SLO-100, to get it to sound good, is WAY LOUDER than most people can handle. They end up playing at house volumes where the amp is underwhelming. There are only a couple amps I've played that I really caution...
FWIW, my perspective is that IIIs are much better in the live band than a IIC+ because of the extra harshness. IIC+ suck live in a band mix, too smooth & polite for hard rock or heavier. That said the C+ is much better in the bedroom than a III.
I'd take a IIB, III or IV any day of the week...
