Just recently that changed with shipping cabs(used to be 25-35 bucks) and the free ship to stores. The only time I've had a damaged anything from them was when I've bought stuff out of Florida stores. Last one was a 1960 Classic cab that came on a pallet....without any additional packing. Just...
The examples that I owned, absolutely killed the tone and made it sound flat.
But, I have no idea what master was added, or when it was done so maybe the versions used today sound better?
I had one VHT cab long ago....for about 2 days until I returned it to GC. Worst POS cab I've ever heard in my life. Had all these high expectations since I had both a D60 and a D120 in the room.
No punch, no nothing. It had those P50s. It sounded so bad I didn't even bother to try different...
If the feel is kinda stiff, I suggest running it as much as possible, and even leaving it on standby for hours if you can. The new Naylor I ordered sounded just like the 1995 version but felt pretty stiff....but, after about 6 months the Naylor 'Sticky' feel finally showed up. The transformers...
The first example was a 2555 jubilee from 87. It had a strange 'decay' to the gain. Had newer F&T filter caps. At the time, I'd owned a bunch of Jubilees, 2555s, 2554s, 2550 and 2553. I was very familiar with their sound. This amp didn't sound like a Jubilee should...I thought it was modded but...
I guess I go by my ears, and most if not all of my vintage Marshalls have sounded great and been very quiet. This 1980 2203 I just got, can't even tell it's running its so quiet. I hear a difference for the worse with F&T caps...hence whenever I've got an old Marshall with them, I order ARS...
Congrats! The sound of Rock.
My 72 is a killer amp; stock it was a destroyer of worlds and now even more so with a 5 gain stage mod. But, I picked up a 68/69 SuperTrem and it's even got more '3D' tone than the 72. Biggest difference is the C1998 OT in the 68; vs the C2668 in the 72. The 1998...
One thing that is also true, just like amps that are the same circuit, manufacturer, year made etc....identical Mesa V30 cabs for example can sound vastly different from one another....it pays to try the cab out if possible. Some are dogs; and some are killer.
Vintage Marshall cabs, esp from the 60s will command big prices since they’re highly collectible. Tolex/ no tolex, doesn’t matter. A 1968 cab beat to hell but has original speakers will still get 4K, maybe 6K. If you buy one, and re tolex it, you just lost money. Just the way it is, They aren’t...
Yep. It’s a good idea to change filter caps in amps that are 10 or more years old.
But, it’s definitely not always needed. Over 60+ pre 1990 stock/modded Marshall’s; only 1 had leaky caps that I had to change. One other 2204 had F&T filter caps and it sounded strange…changed them to ARS and it...
I picked up a clean 1980 2203 last week for 1700. If he wants to sell he’ll lower the price. Regarding the big can caps, I’d play it first and if it rips and is quiet, those caps may be just fine. When an old Marshall sounds killer as is, no need to change a thing. Imo.
Most other amps, yes...
