Same. It was fine but I got better tones from pedals.
I got a chance to play the 800 with the band tonight. Got damn these Marshalls are designed to sit in the mix. R7 into BB pre into low input. I think I’m finally happy. After 30 plus years of chasing my tail.
Saw them in Detroit play Mindcrime start to finish. Probably around '88 or '89. Suicidal Tendencies opened for them.
Yes, I am 100 years old. Or at least that's how I feel this morning.
I have a Bogner OS 2x12 that confirms what you are saying. It’s punchier than my Marshall 4x12. I’ve had the 2/12 for probably 20 years. It’s almost as big as the 4x12 tho. 4x12s have a weird phasing issue that makes it less punchy, I think. I might be talking out of my ass
Thought I would share one of my songs. Probably not the usual style for you guys but I welcome your input. I recorded this a couple years ago. I play all the instruments except the drums. Those were done in Logic. The guitar was a Waterloo.
Anyhow, I hope you like it.
Here is a quick and dirty video of the JCM800. The first half is direct, no boost. The second half is with a Rimrock Mythical Overdrive Klon clone.
Video angle inspired by Blake.
Something a bit more tight. I can probably get them dialed. So far the Boss is probably the best.
Wondering if an SLO pedal in the low input would be interesting?
2204 50w vertical input from 1982. It’s all original and had 6550 tubes. I was surprised at how great it sounds. I was thinking it was going to have less gain than the EL34 model I had. I don’t think I would have been able to tell the difference. This one might be a little punchier in the bottom...
Top 3 I have owned
Bogner Duende 6L6 (still have)
Cage Corsa (still have)
1982 JCM800 50w. 6550s
Edit to add the Marshall. The Komet was great but the Marshall deserves a spot in the top 3
I had a JCM800 and a 101b at the same time. You could get near identical tones from the 101b but you had to crank the presence. You don't realize how bright a Marshall is until you try to match it with another amp.
1. The last VH album with killer guitar tones. Pre-eventide
2. Hang em high. Killer riff and classic Alex and EVH swing.
3. Full Bug, Secrets, and Little Guitars are also great songs.
4. Intruder snare drum tone
