If it's fretting out at the first fret then you don't have enough relief. loosen the truss rod a little. You probably didn't need to shim the nut.

I have a Boss GT-8, and it has the functionality of several Boss pedals (Slow Gear, Harmonizer, etc) - the acoustic sim isn't great, but would be ok within a band/live context. It sounds a lot more like a piezo guitar than a 'in your face miked up acoustic' - but throw some verb and chorus on...
I have a red dunlop fuzz face (reissue) that I tweaked a little and socketed the transistors. Then I bought a matched set of NKT275s from small bear electronics, put em in and then played with the trimpots. Sounds 200% better than stock, but I'm still not sure I'm a 'fuzz' guy.
