I've got a little Orange PPC112. It looks pretty and it seems like its built solidly.
It does, however, sound a little boxy, especially under the mic. The stock Vintage 30 was alright, but a little harsh. I had a Creamback H-75 in it for a little while before I moved the speaker to my 4x12. It...
Not really. The Duncan Distortion is actually based on (or at least closely related to) the JB but with an oversized ceramic magnet. I have read that the Duncan Custom is allegedly based off the DiMarzio Super Distortion or the Mighty Mite version (which makes sense, same wire gauge, similar DCR...
I dig the music. Not sure how I feel about the Lambesis thing yet, though.
They always have the best production, IMO. The tone in Shadows Are Security is something I've been chasing for years.
So I'm looking at the Suhr SSV for a LP-type guitar. I want a traditional PAF-type with a slightly hotter edge, and the specs suggest this might be just that.
What is it like? How does it compare to, say, the Duncan '59?
Thanks. :)
Another interesting comparison:

It would seem to me like Marshall Vintage speakers are actually warmer, contradicting a lot of reviews which describe them as brighter. Maybe those are comparing the 8 ohm Chinese vs the 16 ohm Marshall Vintage which is way more common.
I think I'm...
Bump!
Anyone has any more input?
I'm undecided about pulling the trigger on a couple of Marshall-branded V30's or Mesa OEM V30's. Wanted to know you guys' thoughts.
How do those compare to the rest of its EHX/Tung-Sol/Mullard relatives IYO? I really like the Mullards, personally, but I wonder if those Svetlanas are a tad smoother.
Actually, I take that back about the Mullard CV4004. I gave it some more time. It kills. It's got the grind of a Shuguang with the clarity of a Tung Sol. Killer tube. My new fave.
Thought I'd bump this thread to share my recent experience with some new tubes I ordered.
The Ruby C7 (same as Genalex standard pin) is nice and mid-focused with a hint of top-end sparkle. It's more open, yet smoother and bigger than the JJ ECC83S. It's not as grindy or as big-sounding as the...
It seems like they're nice speakers. However, in that vid at least, the difference doesn't seem as massive as the difference between a Mesa and a Chinese V30. Based on that vid, I'd say the Marshall Vintage is kinda in between the Mesa and the Chinese V30, but much closer to the Chinese than the...
That's the thing. That video kinda contradicts everyone saying Marshall Vintage are "crispier" and "brighter" than the other V30's. At least that's what I'm hearing.
Thanks for the replies, dudes!
About the Marshall vs Mesa vids, yeah... hard to tell from those vids. The cabs are different, but not just that. The speakers are 16 ohm vs 8 ohm, and 16 ohm speakers tend to be brighter than 8 ohms. You can tell here:

But yeah, that Mesa vs Chinese...
Hey!
So has anybody had a chance to directly A/B these two? I keep reading conflicting reviews. Some say the Marshall is brighter, some say it's warmer. Some compare the 16 ohm Marshall to the 8 ohm Chinese or viceversa, and well... that's not really a fair comparison considering the 16 and 8...
