I wouldn't say the Aldrich is completely different from the JB. Yes, it's smoother, fatter, and hotter, but I think it has a lot more in common with the JB than it does with, say, a PAF-type.
FWIW, I think my Ibanez TS808 is tighter and smoother than the Maxon OD808 and OD9 I used to have. The Maxons cut less low-end and the 808 is tad more transparent, though, if that's what you're after.

There used to be an old Marshall Mode Four cab with K-100's too. It pops up used every so often nowadays. It was the MF400. They're often inexpensive, and they're built well.
BTW, current Marshall cabs have a plywood back. For the longest time, I think from the 80's all through the early 2010's, they used MDF backs instead.
So in this case, I'd rather have a new(er) 1960A/B rather than the old JCM-branded ones if I were going to change the speakers, personally.
Standard or Custom? That's not usually what the Customs retail for, though, is it? Just checked. They're *normally* around $800, aren't they?
I agree, SE's (same as LTD's and almost everything that comes out of the WMI factory) are great guitars not just for the money. I picked up a Mike...
Oh, yeah, when going from Standard to Drop tuning I have no problems at all. Going a whole step down all throughout is not a problem either. It's just this one guitar that I have to loosen the strings all the way to raise or lower the bridge. Honestly, that's more of a problem with the bridge...
Not even when loosening a retightening the string?
I have not tried the Hipshots. I still think the Grovers, Gotohs, and PW's are great if you don't rely on loosening the strings to adjust anything. The Gotoh 510's in particular have been really really great. But that one guitar with locking...
Detuning. Yes, they break. Right where the string enters the post and it locks, it usually ends up facing away from the nut and bridge once it's locked and tuned up. It creates a pretty sharp angle in the string here, and that's where it breaks if I detune, and then tune up again. Not always...
Well, in my case, because I can't loosen and re-tighten the strings with locking tuners because they usually make the strings break. That's kind of a PITA if you have a bridge you have to adjust with the strings loosened like a TonePros wraparound.
Yeah, but DCR doesn't tell the whole story. The DiMarzio X2N is like 15K, and the Duncan JB is 16, yet the X2N pretty much annihilates the JB in terms of output.
Thank you guys for the replies.
The Painkiller does seem interesting for sure!
Each to his own. I do find the BW a bit hotter than the Distortion. It has the same DCR, but it has a three magnets rather than one, and I do think it shows... but it's interesting that you find the D Activator hotter. I'm really curious about giving it a try!
