    Yes! Herbert Loop Tricks! :D

I haven't tried this entirely yet, but just experimented with the input meters of my FX unit and a lead and it looks like it works. The magic is that the Herbert loop switches BOTH the send and the return of the loop, not just always send on with the return switching between the internal and...

Best effects for High Gain Rhythm

If it's straight up high gain, nothing! I used to use a spot of stereo chorus or detune years back for more of that multi-tracked kinda sound, but that was with crapper equipment and when the amps and basic sound got better the effects were removed. For straight heavy the only thing I'd use is...

    Biasing a quad (Marshall EL34 100/100)?

That calculates what the bias current needs to be. The maths bit was to see if I can set the bias without having to buy any adapters or sockets or anything. I'm being a cheapskate and seeing if I can do it for free using just a multimeter rather than have to spend another £40 on something from a...

    Biasing a quad (Marshall EL34 100/100)?

Ah, good old Olaf, you always have answers! I should just PM you if I have a technical question!  I take it if I can find any resistor leading to each grid I can calculate the grid current by measuring voltage across that and knowing what value R it is? Or if I take the HT fuse out...

Mk 1 Herbert owners using Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz pickups?

Yeah, still clips with my noticeably lower output dimarzio humbucker too. Not exactly the renowned super-clean "piano" sound (or crystal clear as you put it) with the single coils in that other guitar either. The JB isn't exactly "very slightly distorted" either, it's nearer "unusable" with the...

    How does it actually work?

I'd love to build an amp one day for fun. Never enough time though. So in the mean time I'd just like to know how the one I have works. I have thought about buying an amp kit or an old basic head and experimenting with some mods, but I know it'll end up collecting dust and costing me money I...

    Biasing a quad (Marshall EL34 100/100)?

Cheers! So you're saying just because my Diezel's EL34s are set to 35mA per tube doesn't mean my Marshall should be? So i need to take the max plate dissipation (25W). Find 70% of this = max plate idling power? Divide by the B+ Voltage (what's that, plate voltage?). So P/V = I = idling plate...

    How does it actually work?

Forgot to say, cheers Olaf! I had a brief look at that, but when I'm not so busy and have more thinking time I'll sit and have a good analyse. Very informative. Is there a particular reason you add the extra lead triode between the two crunch ones, rather than on the end of them, or is that...

    Biasing a quad (Marshall EL34 100/100)?

Cool. But I'm right in thinking you can check them one at a time with all 4 in, you don't need some overly complicated 4-socket contraption unless you're lazy or it's your day job?

    Biasing a quad (Marshall EL34 100/100)?

Hello! I was thinking about getting some kinda valve socket bias adapter thing (like the one from tubetown.de) to plug my multimeter into to bias my Marshall power amp. I'm used to my Diezel Herbert with the external pots where you have easy banana plug connectors and just bias the pair with...

Mk 1 Herbert owners using Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz pickups?

Cheers! Any ideas if the PRS humbucker is "medium" or "hot" or anything? The JB is supposedly "Hot" or "Hot Rodded" on the SD website, but not deemed "Ultra High" like the Invader or Dimebucker. The neck Jazz is supposedly deemed "medium" output. This distorts too. Obviously being in the neck...

Mk 1 Herbert owners using Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz pickups?

After more googling it appears the output from a JB vs 81 verdict is undecided. :(

Mk 1 Herbert owners using Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz pickups?

Thanks! Any guesses how high an output they are compared with a passive Seymour JB? Is that when you hit it hard only, or just medium? Googling suggests the EMG 81 is "a lot hotter" than the JB.

Mk 1 Herbert owners using Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz pickups?

Can anyone help prove if I'm going mad. :aww: Who has a Mk1 Herbie, and has a guitar with Seymour Duncan JB bridge pickups (or Jazz Neck)? Someone must do, hundreds of guitars come with them standard! If you do, can you do me a favour and tell me how loud you can put your guitar volume pot and...

    How does it actually work?

Cool. Will do. So Herbie has 4 gain stages? Is that is 4 gain stages for all channels, all the time, + and - modes, and it uses v2 just to get 2 triodes configured within a different bit of circuitry for channel 3 instead of 2 of the others?

    How does it actually work?

LOL. I get the principles of how all the tubes and circuity bits work on a component level so I'm obviously ahead of the "Guitar -> Glowing Magic -> Wonderful Sound" level, but each of those 6 preamp tubes has effectively 2 little amplifiers in (2 triodes, kinda equivalent to 2 vintage...

    How does it actually work?

Cool, cheers for the info Olaf! I've got a slightly better idea now, but still have more questions... So is it V1A is always like a clean input buffer regardless of channel, or does the gain of it change depending on the channel and hence is sometimes used for distortion? V3B is a CF that...

Serial Number Help On A VH4

Yep, If you really love an amp you have to feel it from the inside. Make sure you know what you're doing though or she may get very upset if you fiddle her without knowin what you're doing though. Mods should only be done by or under strict supervision of Pimp Papa. Hehehe.

(Whoops, meant triode, not tetrode, that's got more grids innit!)
