Serial Number Help On A VH4

I love my Herbert but I've never considered going on a date with it.

    How does it actually work?

Hello! I was thinking about tubes recently and it occurred to me I don't actually know how my Herbie preamp works (or any other high gain amp head) and which tubes are doing what or distorting or not! So V1 and V3 are always used, and V2 gets added for Ch3, I know that much. But each of those...

    I love my Hagen!

Get yourself a THD hot plate. I live in a terrace house and even in my basement I can't play the Herbie after 10pm, and during the day it's often still around that no volume/suddenly too loud part of the knob. I'd considered all sorts of plans from buy a little Blackstar to playing into my...

    Herbert's Birthday!

I do trust you Peter. Last time I sent it to Papa's home I still had troubles with the different Herbie I got back due to tubes, although it lasted about 6 months that time. Haven't had problems for years now though, so I have plenty of trust in the amp, and I'm sure if there was a proper...

    Herbert's Birthday!

"About"? Don't you know it's "Birthday"?  Tbh it's more the anniversary of me owning 'a' Herbert. I don't know how old this one is,it's slightly later than my first one, as I had so many tube problems with the first one it went back to Germany and the one I got back was a different...

    Herbert's Birthday!

Fetch me a party hat: I've had a Herbert 7 years today! Got a band practice so playing it nice and loud and ordered it new preamp tubes. :)

More info on MIDI In phantom power please!

Modded it via the XLR. Electrical taped the ends of the Columbus and existing phantom power wires and neatly tie-wrapped them back so they're completely safe but I can put it back exactly to factory spec if required. All works! Doesn't hum. Hooray! Well,it hums a bit, but that's even...

Is this Herbie modded or is this a production mod?

Whilst looking at modding the phantom power (see other thread) I noticed some components near v1 look hand soldered in compared with the rest and aren't the values written on the board. Have some values changed during production or is this Herbie modified? C13, C24, R37 say 12p, 220p and 100k...

They didn't have any plastic ones like that, only metal. I probably have one of them at home, but the standard pin of the ac psu it comes with is 2.5mm, not 2.1mm. Probably so you don't plug standard Boss 9v DC into it.

I've looked into the audio transformer Olaf but it's probably too much work to mod the Pedal Switcher board, may not be possible to fit, and I'm not gonna risk lots of time and money on it since I want it working ASAP. I nearly bought a 2.5mm jack at lunch time until I realised in the shop that...

AH-HAAAA!!!! Just noticed a very interesting phenomenon. Now with the oscilloscope connected closer to the amp, when the grounded crocodile clip of the oscilloscope is connected to the Herbert phantom power -ve (not using differential probes) the hum goes LOADS quieter. I repeated it with a...

More info on MIDI In phantom power please!

I've had a long evening of much experimentation with a multimeter and oscilloscope... I don't believe it's an under voltage problem as I could power the VL Pedal switcher from a DC linear PSU with it plugged in to the guitar in jack and brought it down to about 7V input and it still didn't get...

More info on MIDI In phantom power please!

One more question before I go have a look tonight: Is the midi phantom power from the Herbie totally floating or is the -ve connected to ground? If so, and the ground of the audio is connected to the "digital" ground in the Pedal Switcher then I'll have made a massive ground loop, or tried to...

Always good to learn more things about electronics. :) Unfortunately too often I spend my days testing other peoples stuff, not making my own though. :( Apparently Zachary Vex uses a "negistor" circuit to make high voltage in his tiny Z Vex nano head. Trying to work that one out just makes my...

BTW, won't that voltage doubler only work with AC based on the pic? There's no components before the Pedal Switcher's rectifier as far as I remember. Will double check tonight though.

The Herbert does the most beautiful Clean, Crunch and Distortion, but it doesn't do the filthy nasty fuzz! Peter designed it to sound beautiful, but sometimes I want nasty!  Can't put that in the switchable as post wrong levels so goes super-saturated and then too low output. One of...

I can't guarantee in the ground control, but that works fine on its own. The rectifier in the Pedal Switcher is where I put in the diagram so there's not mini transformer or visible magic that comes before it's converted to full-wave rectified dc. I wondered if the Varistor could do something...

More info on MIDI In phantom power please!

Good plan! I don't know the current individually but the supplied 9v ac PSU with the pedal switcher is 500 mA output and is designed to phantom power the Ground Control from it. So whatever it is it should be less than 500 mA by whatever margin voodoo labs intend.

Thanks Peter and Olaf. I love you guys, you're the best! :D Hmmm... to mod the Herbie or not... Would be a far more elegant solution, but then I can never have a head/cab/ground control only jam session when I'm feeling too lazy to take everything. I assume the phantom power...
