Layman's preamp tube checking. Take 1 new tube and try it in each socket and see if it solves the problem. I'd try v3 then v1 before the others. Only takes a few minutes to try out.

I'd say that's rare. Over the years I've usually seen from 1750-2200. Median $2k. On occasion they go for $1650 or so. 1200-1300 even 1500 is pretty low.

I think the in your face factor has more to do with guitar/cab/speaker selection and volume. The vh4 comes alive when it's LOUD.

The duncan blackouts aren't bad at all for actives and they'll fit in EMG sized holes. They are however really hight output.

FWIW: 2007-2010 were more compressed than 2011+ They also have more gain than pre-2007. IMO, the 2011+ are more open like the older ones, but with more bite and clarity. 2007-2010 sound more like an evil version of the best marshall you've ever heard.. I have limited experience with pre 2007...
