Definitely a subjective thing, but I can't see myself ever dropping the kind of cash that the "new high end" costs on an amp. $2000 is as high as I've gone- was 14 years ago and I'm unlikely to go that high again, certainly not higher. Fortunately, the industry is trending towards more "lunchbox...

Same features as the FB100 (including the mid boost and the noise gate), but with a 25w 6L6 power section, attenuator (25w/8w/1w/off) and a line output (assuming this sends the power amp colored signal). Sounds pretty F'in cool to...
Cool, glad you're liking it. Thanks for the follow up! I run mine with treble and mids really high, bass at 5/6 (depth switch off), presence at about 6 , and the mid boost on. I play metal exclusively (extremely stuff), so versatility isn't a concern for me.
The big benefit of a handwired amp like yours is that a good tech should be able to fix it regardless. Circuits in that type of amp are generally less complex, everything should be relatively simple to get to and replace.
Haven't played an Archon, but I am thrilled with my FB100. Would replace it in a heartbeat if something happened to it- and that's saying a lot considering I'm pretty frugal these days.
I've seen Jens Kruse's list of mods offered for the Powerball, might be what you're looking for since there are things you dig about the amp already. http://krusekontrol.com/engl_mods/engl_powerball_mod
Thanks! Yeah, I would definitely define our sound as "Morbid Angel school" death metal. MA, Nile, Hate Eternal, Vader, etc are huge influences of mine.
I'm Dave, the original version of my band played a show with Fool's Crown at the billiards club in Columbus about 12 years ago. I had a Peters Chimera at the time that you were pretty interested in.
My band just released a new demo track, guitars were done with the Helix (Angl Meteor model) and an Ownhammer IR. Pretty damn happy with the way this one came out. Old school death metal, no core or djent elements.

I think it's the "you are your own worst critic" phenomenon. I get into bad writing ruts, and many times I have noticed that a lot of my favorite songs and albums have riffs that I wouldn't have been satisfied with using myself, yet fit the big picture. This realization doesn't really help me...
HX stomp would be cool, just be sure to try out some 3rd party IR's with it- a good IR makes a world of difference. I have a LT, but would probably have opted for the stomp had it been out first.
I love the Engl sound and feel as well, nothing odd about that. It's not for everyone, and that's fine, contrary to the way lots of gear forum denizens seen to think.
