I used to have one of those silver-colored ones, and it did sound a bit different than the standard Ruby C5's. I dropped it once, and that was the end of it, so I never got the chance to directly A/B those tubes. They are no longer in production, AFAIK. Here's some discussion regarding the...
If you do a comparison video, a 2203 would be a good plataform to showcase the differences, IMO.
BTW, I ordered a Ruby 12AX7AC7 HG+, a Mullard CV4004, and a Sovtek 12AX7WC to try out. They'll be here in a couple of weeks (friggin' international shipping). I'll let you know how I feel they...
I used to have a Randall RD5 and now I have an RD1.
For some reason, the RD1 is noticeably darker. Both sound great, but the RD1 is a lot more bedroom-friendly. Both sound great through a good cab. I bet they'd sound great through the Captor too.
Excellent! Thank you. I'm even more curious about the Genalex and the Mullard now. I've been meaning to find something that's a bit more lively/broader/thicker than the JJ ECC83S, but with a similar kind of emphasis on the mids. I'll have to order a couple of these to try out...
How would you say the Mullard CV4004 and the Genalex standard compare? Are they similar at all? And how would you say they compare to others like the Tung Sols, Ruby C5's, etc.?
I would really like to try the Mullard CV4004. The Ruby 12AX7AC7/Genalex 12AX7 standar pins also interests me.
I agree with the Electro Harmonix being a bit "smeared", but I wouldn't say it's balanced, personally. I'd say it's got a relatively big (and slightly loose) low-end with scooped...
Those were later relabled Relic 30's. I have a pair in my 1960A along with some Chinese V30's. They sound killer. They're a bit darker (yet tighter) than Mesa V30's. I believe most of those Vintage 30 MF's were UK-made, but I've seen the MIC sticker on them too.
BTW, I personally think there's an overstament in all of the reviews that say "oh, yeah, they're totally more organic and passive-like". Yes. They're slightly more attacky/percussive than the 81/60, and yes, the low-end rolloff isn't quite as steep (not by much, though), but they're a lot...
I didn't think they were better, just different.
I agree with everyone saying the JH-B is more attacky than the 81. There's also a bit more low-mid content compared to the 81, and it's a whole lot hotter. As hot if not a tad more than a Blackout.
I personally preferred them to blackouts, as...
Depends on how meaty you wanna go.
The Duncan AHB-1B has a lot more going on in the lows and low-mids compared to an 81. Also more treble and a lot more output.
The JH-B has slightly meatier lower mids than and 81 with a touch more attack, and is considerably hotter as well. To me, it's as hot...
For me, the 81X was a huge disappointment. Not because it didn't sound good, but because I felt it brought absolutely nothing new to the table.
To me, it sounds just like an 18V-modded 81 with a touch less output. That's it. I'd rather have the standard EMG's, personally.
I originally got the...
IME, the whole 16 vs 8 ohm thing is part of why (along with some other factors) Marshall cabs are usually pretty bright compared to other cabs, especially 8 ohm ones like Mesa or ENGL.
I like the tone of Tortex, but I prefer the feel of black Jazz III's. I think those are stiffo?
I use Tortex Jazz III 1.35mm. It's a bit of a compromise, though. They're not quite as stiff and smooth as standard black Jazz III's.
