Perhaps some of the more knowledgeable techs here can correct me, but that sounds like a bad idea. If I recall, that's a good way to kill your tubes. Cathode poisoning or something along those lines due to the cathode being hot but no voltage on the plates. Wouldn't recommend.
How much do they actually compete though? I would think they are for separate purposes, mostly. Plus if you're trying to replace a cab with a load box, you'll also need some sorta PA to be heard through, which will add to the cost. If you're planning to just go into the FOH with an IR, well then...
