Vh4 has that 'accessible' power amp saturation/distortion from 12 o'clock onward on the master volume. That's really the only feature that sets it apart from the power sections of the other amps you listed I believe.

I'm not very familiar with godsmack but I have to say, the Schmidt is capable of an AWFUL LOT. It has a very decent amount of gain on tap. I have never once felt I needed 'more' out of it. I believe it comes down to your pickups. I've run a number of pickups through it (including EMGs) and it...

Haha they'd earned their rest - but still get called into action occasionally :). Spirit - The Schmidt would be a refreshingly different amp to your collection :P. I look at it as the unsung hero/underdog of the Diezel line. It makes no sense because there's no denying the sheer brilliance...

Agreed :) . Perhaps "massive, massive disservice" was a little strongly worded, however I only emphasised that fact due to the difference in tone I perceive between my EMG equipped guitars and my and my housemates passive guitars. It was surprising, in a way. Compared to my active guitars...

I've had some good results using a Shure Beta 56A. It seems very easy to position. I remember just plopping it infront of my 1960A playing my Schmidt one day and got a damn decent tone! Both my housemate and I have SM57's too, he has a Rode NT-2A which we're yet to try on guitars properly...
