I recently did a shootout with Sovtek, Linlai, Shuguang, JJ, Mullard, Genalex, EH, JJ, Svetlana and TS Preferred Series. I’ve come to the conclusion that the differences in them can 99% be overcome with EQ. If you don’t have an EQ in the loop then I could see brand choice being more important...
The 75’s will overpower the 65’s; you will be hearing mostly the 75’s. Both are cool, IMO. 65’s are more old school (mid heavy, darker, break up more), 75’s more modern (tight & bright, more lows, cleaner but still has a good rumble to it).
I don’t like cab-directly-on-the-floor tone. The floor becomes part of your rig which is a bad thing, you move to another room or venue and your tone changes significantly. And you don’t want to step too far into the bass player’s territory. I’ve had about 20 different cabs and I’ve never heard...
On just about any amp I have the treble cranked all the way and it’s often still not enough. But the Q is typically too wide, or centered on an unideal frequency so It’s adding unwanted harshness. And I want a bit of a boost around 100hz but the Q on the bass knob is too wide as well. With an...
I tune down to G#. 99.9% of amps were not designed for that so EQ in the loop is absolutely necessary or it’s butt mud city.
I’m a rack guy. I’m very sensitive to tone suck and with a good analog EQ between the pre & power amp I don’t hear any signal degradation which leads me to believe that...
I have some Greyhounds, they’re awesome for high gain. They break up less than you’d think for a 70 watt speaker and have a heavy magnet type of tone. EVM12L and Redbacks are my favorite speakers so that works for me.
I’ll be the 3rd person in here to say I can’t deal with the 12th fret inlay. Deal breaker. It might as well be a Nike swoosh. Head stock and font ain’t great either.
Rocktron Prophesy is the most under rated preamp of all time. Super flexible EQ, built in effects, clean channel is pretty decent, high gain channel can get into sort of Engl-ish / boosted Recto-ish territory. Way better tones than the Chameleon/Pro Gap/Voodoo Valve. I’ve never tried the...
What does a worn suspension do to the tone? I had a 12S and it was not like you describe; it was looser than a 12L. It did have the awesome fuller mids but I got rid of it ‘cause it had virtually no attack.
Eminence EM12 > Delta Pro. The Delta Pro is just kind of weird sounding for guitar, imo. But EVM12L > EM12 for sure. The EM12 is a decent copy, it sounds pretty good and is very reminiscent of a 12L but the real thing sounds amazing. Compared to the real deal, with the EM12 it’s like the fizz...
Nothing beats an 80’s or 90’s EVM 12L, imo. 2nd place is a tie between Redback and Scumback H75; Redback has the edge in the room but the Scumback is also fantastic and records way better. I still need to try a Scumback H55 and J75, I have a J55 and, don’t get me wrong, it’s better than a lot of...
The ones with the legs are the H series and they are a little bigger (length/width) than a standard passive pickup (SD, Dimarzio. etc.). In some guitars they will pop right in, in other guitars you will need to sand or route the guitar.
The soap bars are way bigger than a standard passive.
You can get quotes online from freight companies. Last time I got a quote it was around $300. I’ve received 412 cabs via freight from Guitar Center that were simply plastic wrapped to a pallet.
Groove Tubes. You can still get tubes under that moniker but I know the name was bought by Fender and I doubt it’s current iteration has anything to do with the Soul-O amps they made in the 90’s.
I guess I’ll add my opinion since it’s to the contrary of the consensus in here. I had an Uberkab, it was dark and with the resonance knob turned all the way down it was still too resonant and kinda boomy. It is not a tight cab. Not great for the low tuned fast tech stuff I play. It sounded...
There’s wayyyy more 7 stringers in 26.5”-27”; longer 6 stringers exist but are fairly rare. I have a 27” Schecter Banshee Elite that’s actually pretty impressive for a production guitar that costs around a grand. Have you considered putting 6 strings on a 7 stringer?
Might wanna ask for...
I’ve had nothing but good support from Reverb while eBay treats me like they would Shanghai me for a buck if they could get away with it. Reverb purchase, had a speaker stolen off my porch, Reverb refunded me and let the seller keep the purchase money as well, and I’ve received a couple messed...
