Oddly enough there are a lot of Mark IV’s for sale in Europe right now. Most of them have been sitting a while, usually priced €1200-1500. I recently bought a very clean 1991 Mark IVa long head for €1000, which is around $1200. Everything else Mesa is more expensive over here though.
Since it’s originally a IIC, the only upgrade, transformer wise, would be the X101 or the 105, that was the transformers used on the factory IIC+. Everything else would be a downgrade.
Well, perhaps they work differently on the IIB. I don’t know. But yes, I asked Mike about it and he said either 6L6’s or 6ca7’s in the middle positions. He even put new STR415’s in for me when I had it there for service/mod.
It’s not really much different to a DRG, the difference is that in half...
Yes, totally. But on the other hand, I don’t think it really mattered too much for him. Since he would run it with a Stategy 400 power amp anyway.
But thinking that “upgrading” a IIC+ with a Mark IV transformer would make it better and worth more is just nonsense. I would of course pay a lot...
That’s a cool story! And when I come to think about it, I think I’ve read about that, lurking the forum ?
Yes, I’ve heard from Jeremy, who also post on here I think, that the very last, (7 or 8?) IIB KRG’s are something very special in the power section.
I run all 6L6’s as well. I’ve tried it...
Thanks man! I have never tried the purple stripe. But I’ve had the red, blue and currently own an early No stripe + modded with 105 PT and a No stripe Coliseum. They are both awesome! But there is something special with 2C+/2C++ ??
Thanks! Yes it’s a little more raw, i kinda like that as well!
I can post the Battery clip, but the guitars turned out very dark on that one. But hey, it was a first try :)
I think the “Hetfield mod” would refer to the ++ mod, not the transformer. But yes, one of Hetfield ‘s IIC+ heads has had the transformer replaced with an export Mark IV transformer. But I think that’s because the original one blew up and the Mark IV transformer was what Mesa Boogie had at the...
Thanks man! ? Yeah, they did. And probably a bunch of room mics, eqs and a lot stuff. I just thought it was kinda cool getting somewhat close to the tone, using simple recording equipment in my basement.
Hello everyone!
New poster here! Been lurking a while though. Did a video on my Mark IIC++ Coliseum KDRG trying to capture the black album tone. I think it turned out pretty good.
