My experience with the 50 watt dual reverb 900 was :
I liked it well enough in a hard rock cover band....but after blowing up the output transformer twice, I had had enough. Even though it was still under warranty, I had to pay shipping (for repairs). I liked the tone well enough at the time...
I think a 5150 into a 1x12 Greenback would be skating on very thin ice.
Even a single V-30 is iffy , IMO. I once toasted a GB , in a 4x12, with a cranked, boosted Marshall 50 watt 2204 head.
I once heard, and played for a few minutes- an Uber. into a 1x12 EV, and it was awesome.
BD, please let me(us) know how you like the neck PUP. I'm ready to pul the trigger on the bridge position 2nd degree BB, but unsure of the neck. I have Duncan JB/'59 combo in my '73 LP custom now. I've not tried allot of neck pups, but right now I prefer the Duncan Alinico II over the Duncan '59...
What a great job! Thanks !!
They all sound good. Of the clips, I like the MCP 2nd degree blackbelt best. I'm surprised I don't prefer a hotter PUP, I think that 2nd ' BB is like an overwound PAF, 9 or 10k?? ..live and learn... it sounds great at all drive levels ... Thanks again James!
I thought the 34s sounded great and chunky at the start...but the mids are so much nicer on the GEs...
And when I hear or play my guitar solo,, I always think more bass and scooped sounds great, until you mix the rest of the band in...
very nice comparison... I'd take those GE 6CA7s all day...
thanks guys...it would be easier to tell what I didn't change...heh
Icepick reduction: Remove preamp bright cap C5
reduce neg. feedback R22 from 100k to 51k
increase fizz cap c18 from 50pf to 100pf
Voicing/gain:
all audio caps to Sozo, not the vintage but the regular (except C1=Solen fast cap)...
Ed, sorry to see this...speedy recovery!
About the quotes above:
I'm not convinced. I realize media can hype things, and maybe they've gotten to me too. I'm to believe ALL these Pit attacks are from bad owners? So, how many bad owners own Golden Retrievers, or Black Labs? Surely as many, yet...
What started out as a filter cap job ended up allot more (mods). I always disliked the stiffness and sheer icepick factor of my mid 80's Marshall 2204. Yea, I should have just sold it and bought a Metroamps kit...but I didn't. But I now like the amp. Quick homemade backing track...limiting on...
For years, I used an empty, rectangular guitar case. Opened up, stand it on it's end- and placed in front of a roaring 4x12 cab. Worked great in small bars...not only did it stop the pinpoint foward blast, but helped to disperse the sound out the sides.
Downside was it looked hillbilly as hell...
