I've done a ton of testing with real gear at different volumes. With my setup I've found that around 100 dB at the cab is the sweet spot, up to 105. More than that and the mic starts to not handle it very well. Going lower is fine until the amp "turns off". Here's one I did with a Dual Rec at...
That's why I picked banana reverse! Back when I was gigging with a Kamikaze, by favorite thing about it was all the inappropriate phallic movements you could do with it on stage..
Following up, the '68 Custom PUPs measure 6.77 on the bridge & 6.80 on the neck.
Man, the more I play this guitar the more I like it. By far the easiest Gibson I've ever played. I think I'll start an 80s cover band just so I can gig it.
Interesting thing I found yesterday while...
Man, I've had both, I'd go with the 100. The 30 has great tone but the body is like pretty much any other good amp. The 100 on the other hand just has a massive push.
Simul Class amps up through the Mark III blue stripe had the Class A pair wired in triode. The Green stripe & the C+ RI have the Class A pair wired in pentode. The Mark IV and V have a P/T switch.
I can see myself bringing an angled cab to a show where I'm not micd up for your reasons. If I'm micd up though, straight all the way & mix in the monitors with everything else.
I'm guessing this is bound to happen with any speaker that's been in production for decades, as manufacturing processes and wood pulp supply are variable.
That's the common wisdom.
In this case I just reamped all my gear against this track since it's a benchmark for good high gain tone that everyone knows. If a tone works or not in this context to me says a lot.
@bubucci I agree.
@Catthan the '57 has the Custombucker & the '68 has the 68 Custom humbuckers. I know the Custombuckers are unpotted, but I don't know if the 68 Customs are.
I'll PM ya on it. The cab has a couple scuffs as good gear should and it sounds killer.
Yeah I've taken a lot of gear in there and honestly it tends to sound a lot better in the store than it does in my garage. :ROFLMAO: That cab is def one of the good ones, and I've got a bunch of 00-03...
If only I had just recorded a sample of each the other day...
To the OP I would choose the vented if I had the choice, but the mid 80s non vented are absolutely nothing to scoff at. Also, don't over think it man, any JCM800-900 aged T75s and any vintage Mark will get you as much there as you...
Yeah, for posterity, my III+ green stripe DRG. Fantastic amp, best III I've had.
That was also my 2002 Recto Trad cab. I traded it in as part of the deal on the '68 RI.
Thanks man. Yeah as I'm putting the puzzle pieces together and playing as many as I can, I'm seeing the same trend.
So generally speaking I did feel the '57 had a special tonal sauce to go with it's fat neck. Lower gain & warm / creamy.
However, we did sort out that by dialing the (very...
I have a lot of thoughts, it was awesome to get the chance to back to back these monsters. Anyway wanted to share the clip for now & I'll weigh in with thoughts & answer questions as they pop up. :) Long story short the two RIs were both killer in their own way, and I took the '68 home.
I did this a while back, hopefully it helps. We ended up blending the 609 & the SM7b for our album tone.
I do like the Fredman technique as well. IMO it's the way to go with 57s.
Thanks guys, I'm pretty happy with hos it's turned out. :)
I was lucky enough to play test all the Customs today, will put a vid up on my channel soon. It was so much fun!
No doubt. They would be FAR better off using a GOOD IR. But, they are in the business of selling cabs so I get it. They need a ringer cab with a mic hard mounted into the right position.
As much as I'm a Mesa fanboi, thier pedals & cabclone IMO are all sub par.
