I have a 2x12" regular wave, love how tight the low end is and how easy it is to move around. It's a bit bright for my tastes with the speakers it came loaded with (Eminience Governor/Manowar) - planning on swapping in some Scumback M75's.
Kinman's are the closest I've found to the true single coil sound without the noise. I replaced the stock pickups in my Custom Shop 56 Strat with Kinman Woodstocks a couple years back and couldn't be happier.
Absolutely love them. I was a Jazz III XL guy for a long time and was hoping for an Ultex variant of it - the sharps seemed like the next best thing and now I'm hooked.
They do wear out quickly though, only gripe. But hell picks are cheap.
All I can tell you is that, out of the guitar's out there that I've owned and played, I'd put the Fender Custom Shop axes up there with the best of them. The smaller builders like Suhr and Anderson are making amazing guitars, but I don't buy that a company like Fender isn't capable of building...
I'd put the Crybaby Rack at the top of my list
I love my older Teese wah's (grey case, handmade boards) - RMC3 and a Picture Wah, both sound amazing. I can't say I'm a fan of the way the new ones are built though, with the jacks soldered to the PCB. Still sound great but I'd be weary of taking...
It's not quite the tone monster that a X99 or Fish is, but check out the Marshall JMP-1. They can be had on the cheap, get some great tones and are road-tested - Dave Murray and Adrian Smith have toured with them for years. Would do a good job of filling a different sonic space from your Mesa...
I'm with you, the R2 channel tightens up nicely with a bit of boost in front of it. I used to use an old FullDrive set to high boost, low gain, which also doubled as a nice boost on the lead channel for some added compression.
I had one for a few months. Ended up moving on since it wasn't as versatile as I would like, but you can get some great tones out of it. Really needs to be cranked loud to get the most out of it, I usually ended up with the MV up half way.
