I can't comment on the Axe, but the HD500 has fantastic dynamic response and touch sensitivity, especially with the lower and mid-gain amps.
The only thing I haven't seen it do yet is that glassy, transparent high-end in a high-gain clip. I think the Axe does a very good job of translating...
I really think this is what it will excel at (and it's pretty clear that Line6 is emphasizing live use considering it's a floorboard rather than a bean). I'm running it through a very clean 100watt EL34 poweramp and it sounds very, very good. So good, in fact, that I might not be able to tell...
+1 on the V-picks; I tried a bunch of different varieties and they're all good (and sound different), though I didn't much care for the crazy thin triangle pick. Been rocking the Diamond for over a year now; it's getting worn, but still shreds like no other and has this fantastic hi-fi attack...
Frankly, I'm surprised it took Nik this long to come up with his own flavor of the Jose mod, especially given the success Fortin and Cameron (and the dozens of other hotrodders) have had.
What's interesting and kind of ironic is that the guys over at TGP seem to like the HD series much more than the guys here on RT, where there seems to be a significantly higher ratio of metalheads to classic-rockers.
So far I'm quite happy with my HD500, but I'm using it more as a live unit...
Did some messing around with it direct last night. Biggest thing I noticed is that dual-amp patches tend to suck DSP and make it hard to put both a delay and a reverb in the patch (lower DSP intensive delays and reverbs can be combined, but forget about it if you want to use some of the more...
Well, I just spent the past two hours tweaking some live patches now that I seem to have a grasp of how to best get the levels unified. The comments below are pretty random since I'm just listing things as they come to mind.
First off, let me assure everyone that the clips you're hearing of...
Chris Beaver is one hell of a crazy player, and so far has been whipping out clips that make Line 6's demo clips sound like ass. They really ought to hire him to do a proper HD demo instead of doing those in house...
So far so good... Looking forward to making some good patches tonight. My biggest challenge last night was getting 4CM to work. Now my challenge is normalizing the volume between the model-only patches directly to my poweramp with the FX only patches that use the amp's preamp.
On the bright...
Agreed. While I personally don't jive with PRS guitars, every one I've picked up has been immaculate and played exceptionally well.
Really, if you want a great Les Paul sound with actual consistency and fantastic attention to detail, you should be looking at Heritage.
While I can understand Gibbo's sales tactic, I think the main (and absolutely warranted) critique of Gibson is that for the price-point, you should get a consistently built, stable guitar. I can spend less on the Suhr Pro Series and get consistently built, stable, and great sounding guitars...
The real test for me would be to see how it sounds and feels boosted. I've heard great SS amps, but the feel just wasn't there. This thing sounds pretty badass though.
Those are two different tube types, and as such they will glow differently. As long as the amp sounds good and no funny business is going on, you're fine :)
That's probably my next choice if the Barber doesn't work out; the clips are pretty killer. But I think the Barber is more what I'm looking for right now based on the clips I've heard.
