That is exactly what I am after with my mods. I am happy with Green (I already changed 1st stage bypass cap to 1uF) and Blue, but the Red is a bit too compressed and backed-off in live mix. So I want to make it more in-front.

If You do so that'd be great if You could write what was done. I am actually during modding my amp to make it brigter, more open and in-front. Maybe Your mods could be aplied to my amp :). The main idea is to put a bit more classic Marshall crunch to the Bogner flavour :).
So far I changed 1st...
Nothing magic here actually :). Every amp works basically the same way. So, if You have bypass cap You can easily attach the wires in place of it and also attach them to the switch with a few caps or cap-resistor combos :). Works great in every amp ;)

If any of You don't like the clean channel of 101B I'd suggest to replace V1A 22uF cathode bypass cap (C3 on pcb) with 1uF. Huge improvement to my ears, the clean tone is tighter now, less boomy and more articulated.

You can also glue the guidance pin with SuperGlue. I do it very often with old Siemens/RFT or Tesla tubes, with no problems after that.
But the tube will work great even without guidance pin, but You got to mark the tube to put it correctly in the socket.

I haven't had a chance to play 20th Ann amp, neither EL34 or 6L6, but my XTC was originally 6L6 driven and it didn't sound good, so I converted it to EL34's. Maybe preamp changes done to 20th Ann made an amp more into 6L6's (which tone I like very much in general), but 101A XTC is definitely the...
Hi!
After a few weeks of trials I decided not to mod R19 resistor, as the cap bypassing 4th gain stage compressed the tone nearly insanely. Instead, I did two other mods:
1) removed C2 1.5uF tantalum cap in Structure circuit and soldered a switchable mod with Wima MKS2 polyester caps with...
Whoah.... wanting even more gain from the amp with every gain stage bypassed... seems a little bit insane ;). Increasing values of anode resistors will squeeze more gain but IMO will add more than just a "little" compression :).
But still clips would be very interesting here :)

I checked almost everything in both cabs and it seems that I have found the reason. Which is WOOD :).
Yesterday I opened both cabs and checked the wiring and speakers. They were totally the same. The speakers have had even quite close serial numbers. After that , followed by the tip given by...
I'll be able to check that not before tomorrow unfortunately. but You are third guy telling about checking the wiring. I could think that same cabs have same wiring but who knows :).
That was the first thing I did to mine cab - tighten the screws. No difference after doing this.
What do You...
Hi!
Imagine two 1960A cabs from the same year (1996), so same speakers, same internal cables, same wood, aprox. same playing time, everything is totally the same. But both sound totally different.
One is very bright and in-front sounding, and the other is dark and dull, very muffled and muddy...
I am not too familiar with Uber circuit but those mods actually works the same way in every amp - it bypasses the cathode resistor of particular gain stage with a cap. I will have same mods in my Marshall 6100. So I am sure You might use it in Uber as well, the thing is to find a right cap value...
Hi!
Some time ago I started to feel Structure circuit a bit too muddy. I liked what it made with tone generally but I felt that the cap let too much bass go through. I was told by Charlie that the cap in the Structure circuit is 1.5uF tantalum. Inspired by the Splawn QuickRod I tried several...
Hi!
Yesterday we worked with Marvel on Structure Mod (detail soon) and found out that Sovtek LPS in V1 (which I like in that position) rings and dings as hell when we knocked the tube itself, but also the chassis or front panel. We thought that the tube went microphonic and replaced it with...
Hi!
I got a request to those of You who has 20th Anniversary XTC amp produced in 2010 or - better - in 2011. I'd like to get a close gut shots of that amp, I am curious of circuit changes. If someone would make them for me I'd be very thankful. Please let me know.
Regards, Andy :)
Indeed that kind of mod can be used in nearly every amp as it works the same way in all of them: it bypasses cathode resistor for more gain and/or for tone shaping in particular way. The thing is what kind of mod do You need as there are two kinds of them: cap only or cap+resistor combo. In that...
