That is awesome tone.. he definitely always has that. I have some vintech preamps, they aren't BAE but they are def in that Neve flavor. I would say a big part of the tone here is the speakers and that Royer bringing the girth to the 57 but with detail and no loss or smearing of the high end. I...
I always thought this demo was good.. obviously the real amp has more beef but the metroplex is an interesting take on "that" tone with the right poweramp. Again though, that fullness and brashness comes from that power amp givin'er.
Thanks for asking! I'm sure nobody really cares but in no particular order and based not just on lead chops and vibrato, but overall chops and song writing, my list might look something like this:
Schenker ( Probably #1, just love his playing)
Andy Larocque
Nuno
YJM
Adrian Smith ( never...
That might be what it needs yes... but also someone else voicing it because the new Friedman ear for tone, favours his softer mids and there is a lack of snap and edge to the tone for my tastes. Also while at it, a variac switch. Simulate that squish.
Probably metroplex... plexi is underwhelming and doesn't cut enough in my setup. Friedman already did the perfect JMP in the randall Lynch brahma module so I had high hopes for the plexi but it just doesn't do that one thing imo. I guess because a lot of it comes from power amp but synergy needs...
What's that proving? He's good. Still not great as a lead player. For the record I like the guy, respect the hell out of him, but he isn't in my top 25 or probably 50
Are you sure? Back to back if you listen to an IR of a mic setup, they are damn close. You might pick the IR but on a recording, you can't say it doesn't sound like a mic on a cab. Live, it's even more of a wash. Especially where you are cutting solos late at night and doing multiple run on...
He's def legit and a great rythm player and more importantly, song writer as he has done some great stuff across multiple bands or groups he's put together. I guess we are talking primarily in the lead department.
I think his lead chops technically are def overrated and I see the same 3-4 things he does just about every solo so I agree, not the level of the guys you mentioned but def a solid foot note due the the material he has written which has stood the test of time. He's a great player for the song. I...
More detail on Premier Guitar Website. They go through a Neve Pre with EQ as well. Adds some mojo I suppose. Interesting too as alund mentioned, the cheapo EQ. I thought he was always going on about his black GE-7 that was modded or the Rocket sig stuff.
Ok I must have missed that or jumped in the vid.. That's the thing with Two Notes, the generic load is good for a wide variety of cabs but some of the other loads are a bit better.
Weren't they always on stage for the look though? I find it interesting as Steve was saying it was the best way to get consistent tone night after night. Who knows, maybe they didn't hold up to road use.
Just as I am looking at making my own IR's, these guys have really through this thing out well. This would give me overload trying to choose mic combos and cabs/speakers but cool nonetheless. So much tweaking is possible with this. I wonder how long ( if not already) before A list studios use...
I started down this path buying analog recording gear and I don't even have big ticket items and the costs run up from preamp to compressors.. I had this crazy idea i will record bands on the side and mix music etc etc.. I can barely get all my connections sorted out and am still placing things...
I think the last time I did this was probably 10 years ago and I think I used an EH 44 magnum poweramp pedal to make some impulses. I just pulled it out of a box as I want to do some captures. Seems like an awful waste of money to blow on a nice linear power amp for something that is done...
I have too much.. my wife says my home studio looks like a museum. BUT my 10 guitars do get rotational play..amps less though. Pedals? Probably mostly just decoration at this point.
