Red Jazz III user for years as well. Did a ton of comparison between the standard reds and the EJs and it's amazing how different the EJs are both feel-wise and tonally. The EJs impart a livelier, snappier sound which I prefer over the standards. And you're absolutely correct, they much easier...
I don't know man. I'm the consummate tube amp snob and it's not like I'm sticking up for some high-dollar amp I blew a bunch of money on. I think the Katana is a killer amp, period. I would personally put it up there with some of the best sounding tube amps, and that's with the stock sounds.
A...
I was just joking...mostly. Anything beyond that, Mr. Willy hit the nail on the head. I'm aesthetically OCD and I like a matching set where amp heads and cabs are concerned. When I see a Mesa head on a Marshall 4x12, my hair hurts and I break out in hives. HAHA
I'm fortunate enough to have...
Sweet looking guitar!
Just joining in on the ML love. I have an '81 USA ML I bought brand-new in '82. It's the guitar I 'grew up' on and the baseline for which I typically judge all others. The thing is a beast, sounds and plays like a dream and I also really dig the V neck shape. For rock and...
No judging here. I'm running a Helix for fx only right now and am still lusting after a Fractal. I just read an AX8 review in one of the guitar mags where they said with the latest update, it may actually sound BETTER than the amps it models. Grain of salt for sure, but there's no doubt the tech...
I totally get the 'too-good-to-be-true' thing. The thing looks like a toy and "on paper" doesn't seem like it would be anything to sneeze at. It's another non-tube amp in a sea of them that all claim to sound just like your favorite tube amp when very few of them actually do. At the end of the...
You won't be disappointed with the Katana at low volumes. Leave it on 100w and turn the master down, or crank the master and put it on .5 w. It'll sound killer either way. And glad to hear the footswitch arrived OK, I still need to get one.
A quick update on my Katana experience...
I'm pretty well past the honeymoon period with my 100w head and I'm actually enjoying it more now than when I first got it.
I run mine into a 16 ohm cab. Not sure whether it reduces output or not, but if you're concerned about volume or how the amp feels/responds, don't be. Even the .5 watt...
I've got the Katana 100w head. The thing sounds killer on every power setting through my 4x12. Even on the lowest setting. I've gigged a Bogner XTC for the last 2 decades. Own VHT CL50, EVH 5153 Stealth, various Marshall and Mesa heads over the years. The Katana hangs with some of the best.
The...
Both the keyboardist/guitarist and bassist in one of my bands grabbed Katanas after hearing my 100w head. Then the second guitarist in my other band also grabbed a 100w head and just scored a 100w combo over the weekend as well. He replaced a killer-sounding Kemper rig and is now gigging with...
Man, really sorry to hear about your accident. I can't even imagine living with chronic neck and back pain every day...brutal. Hope everything goes well.
Beautiful guitar! I was going to ask how you like the pickups too. I just picked up a Custom 24 Floyd with PRS \m/ pickups. I've actually...
I'm not a giant fan of Floyds but in the right guitar, I can generally get tones I like every bit as much as my non-Floyd or hard-tail guitars. I recently picked up a PRS Custom 24 with a Floyd and it's killer sounding...completely stock. It's got PRS \m/ pickups in it, which I'd never heard or...
The middle finger and gestures at Gary and the yawn thing are part of his shtick. He's done variations on those every time I've seen them. I take it as all in good fun between him and his bandmates and can see how an outsider/fan who doesn't get his ultra-sarcastic sense of humor might read it...
On the off chance you don't know this already, they officially released a remastered version that sounds MUCH better. Almost like listening to a completely different album.
For my live gigging needs, this amp has the exact feature set I've been looking for, Mesa or not. 50w, EL34, 3 channels, reverb, solo boost, MIDI. I have to assume they're listening to their customers and striving to tick all the wish-list boxes. I'd been considering the JP2C, but the Mark amps...
I was at Badlands Pawn a few weeks before the show and was told they were going to film that show for a DVD. You can see a film crew in the vid. I hadn't heard they were going to film any of the Japan shows, but if they do, at least they'll have some options. :)
I'll buy whatever they end up...
Forgetting the mic-ed speaker vs. modeled tone for a sec, most every guitarist I've talked to who run in ears hate it. A mic right on a speaker being fed directly to your ear is typically going to sound horrible even through expensive systems with multi-driver molded inserts. There's no air...
