Hard to tell listening on my iPhone. But #1 and #2 sound identical and #3 sounds a tiny bit more distant/muffled in the mix........so I will say #3 is the 5153. Other than that I have no idea.
BTW......I also prefer 8 ohm speakers to 16 ohm. Therefore, I wire my 4x12's for 8 ohm mono. I find 8 ohm speakers less fizzy and more focused than their 16 ohm counterparts. Though the difference is more subtle than the 2 aforementioned wiring schemes.
Yes. However, there is a quite a bit of confusion on the web on what is series/parallel and what is parallel/series. For example.....google image "series/parallel 4x12" and you will see both variations.
Here is what I found with multiple heads using the same cab and speakers. I'll use...
Anybody still play one of these? I'm trying to help our other guitarist replace his old Carvin Legacy. I want to keep it under $1k and it will be used for playing heavy southern rock and classic metal (similar to UFO, Thin Lizzy, etc). We are planning to keep his V30 loaded Legacy cab.
I...
+1. I have a LP Special Jr with dual P-90's. Got it new for about $450. I had to have the nut replaced but now it is my favorite guitar. I use it for everything from country to 80's metal. I rarely even pick up my $2k Standard.
The Super Distortion is not "ceramic" sounding at all to me. It is very fat/warm. If you back it off the strings a bit, it is a really open and dynamic pup. The only thing that someone might not gel with is the signature Dimarzio mid-voicing.........kind of wah sounding. I hate the Duncan...
+1 on the Norton (not the Air Norton). Extremely underrated pup.
The Super Distortion also works really well in superstrats. I prefer the Air Classic over the 36th PAF for neck tones.
I had the 50. It's a fun amp to play for sure. But in the end, the gain was a little "toyish" compared to my other amps. I also found the Red channel over the top and nasal.
To my ears, nothing sounds more pissed off than a 5150/6505 with a Tubescreamer variant pushing it. Most other high gainers don't have that grind in the mids.........even the boutiques. Love it or hate it......no denying that its "brutal".
I had a 1998 LP Classic that was dead sounding no matter what. I tried everything......tons of pup swaps, new electronics, new bridge. Sounded dead acoustic as well. I finally gave up on it. FWIW, the only pup that brought a "little" spark back into it was a BKP Cold Sweat. However, I didn't...
I hate to be the party pooper here......but I really hated the Aldrich. I tried it in a LP and a Charvel San Dimas. It was extremely crunchy/sizzly and bright. It is also very stiff and I felt like I was fighting it constantly to get sustain out of it. Then again, I don't like the SH-5 much...
Dimarzio Super Distortion.........the warmest, fattest ceramic pup out there IMO.
Or wire a 300k tone on the Custom. You can also experiment with a .047 tone cap. That will smooth the highs and beef up the mids some.
Do yourself a favor and check out the Dean "Lights Out" humbucker. Doesn't matter which guitar......I have it in a LP and two Alder/Maple super strats. I went through 5 BKP's, a couple of MCP's, a WCR, Suhr Aldrich and DSH+, and a ton of Duncans/Dimarzios.
I like the pickup so much that I put...
I'm a speaker junkie and I break all my speakers in with a clean, bassy guitar loop before I ever use them. In fact, I made a pine 2x12 iso-cab just for this purpose. I notice the most drastic change after about 10-12 hours (regardless of speaker model). Break-in is a highly debated topic around...
I liked the Diezel, 5153, and Orange.
I thought the Marshall sounded really thin/wimpy compared to the others. Sounded like the regular JVM I played.....to my ears anyway.....maybe not as fizzy, but still thin and one dimensional.
The Randall sounded the worst IMO. Seems like a few of those...
To me, they sound OK in heavy mahogany slabs. But I always end up finding them too bright and a bit scooped in the guitars I've tried them in. If you like the SH-5 but want something fatter in the mids and warmer on top.......I HIGHLY recommend the Dean "Lights Out" Schenker sig pup. I...
