The 81x is a 81 with a resistor prior to the pre-amp to attenuate signal to keep the pre-amp from clipping. That is why it has less output as well. the 18 v mod is much better for the 81, increases headroom and output.
The 81x was a money grab by EMG
ESP's USA CEO Matt Masciandaro, was Georges Guitar Tech with Dokken in the early days and his best friend and best man at his last wedding. So yea I am sure heard a bunch of stuff over the years on endorsement deals. Matt got the job with ESP through George long ago and worked his way up the...
Go to the various speaker manufacturer websites, Eminence, Jensen, celestion, and look at the frequency plots of the 8 ohm and 16 ohm speakers, and indeed you will find a difference in the plots. From the frequency plots the 16 ohm are more pronounced in the upper mids and highs.
Now with...
The 5881 that the SLO's were shipped with is a Russian Military tube which is not a 6L6GC or a 5881, they just happen to be compatible and are very robust and can handle quite a bit of abuse. When Mike Mathews invested and bought the old Reflector Plant these were sold as Sovtek 5881WXT. Many...
Guitar Center and Musicians friend ship out of Kansas City ,MO. The typical process is all the free shipping are put behind all the paid shipping (3 day, 2 day air, etc) so when you get free ground shipping, they ship after the paid orders go. I live close enough that I should always get next...
Power tube output power is dependent on Plate Voltage, screen voltage, output transformer specs fixed bias vs cathode bias. The tube dissipation limits have nothing to do with tube power output, they are just heat limitations for the plate. A Pair of EL34's can put out a 100 watts, 60 watts, 50...
I always biased them up as 35 watt tubes. The datasheet rating is the MAX plate dissipation rating and not an indication of how they should be biased up. The SED KT88's had a max plate dissipation of 42 watts.
I have found the Penta KT88SC are much more tolerant to a high grid to bias (ground)...
No worries,
I was just saying a SLO is not even close to a Marshall design circuit wise. Mikes interpretation of what a good Marshall tone is is going to be different than what others and others would say, etc. Just as anything out there. Some consider the diode clipping Jose tone the best...
The SLO has nothing at all in common with a Marshall circuit wise unless you count the tone stack and phase inverter circuit which 80% of most other amps use. Mike never said the SLO was a Marshall design, he said it was what he considered a great type of hot rodded Marshall should be...
Big Companies will wait until the little guys start getting traction and the big companies perceive the little guys are starting to effect sales. The money it takes to start and win litigation is quite a bit so it it doesn't make sense for Gibson to go after little guys. But Anderson is a well...
Randall hasn't been able to really get the amp line off the ground sales wise. They Had Bruce Engater for a while designing their Modular Series (which was their more successful venture) and had Mike Fortin design a bunch of amps based off his more popular designs. But that has been a huge...
One of my all time George Lynch solo favorites. Also one of his most underrated solos beacuse the song is more of a softer mellower song., really fits in the context of the song.
Great work BTW
Yep for years guys have been doing the EL34 Marshall thing to get his sound and come to know he was using a "harder" sounding tube. NOS US 6CA7's are going for crazy prices.
That old pic of them in the recording studio with that old Marshall with the mystery Jose knob, shows a quad of big...
Big NOPE on this. Yes the 6CA7/EL34 is commonly referred to as the same tube. But in the US Sylvania Made a tube they they called a 6CA7, but it wasn't even close to a EL34. It was a Kinkless Tetrode like a KT77, and KT88. EL34's are power Pentodes. Sylvania also made these tubes re-branded...
