    Lynch's 1988 Soldano SLO

Wasn't that amp in the James Lugo amp shootout a couple of years ago. That definitely wasn't the 90's. ;) Or maybe he had several Snakeskin ones. Because I have seen him play with a SLO just like that for the past several years.

    Winged C's out of production?

Very true, also SED is responsible for upping the quality and standard of current production EL34's. Before SED there were the Chinese and Russian (Sovtek) versions and they were good for the 4th of July fireworks, totally crap, so much Marshall stopped making EL34 based amps. When SED came on...

    Winged C's out of production?

Yep SED did stop making receiving tubes back in 2012. You can still buy them especially EL34's but since it is now a finite number, they are very expensive, and the quality is not what it was. I have seen many catastrophic failures as of late with several of them.

    NAD!! Baron B60

That amp you had for a while was modded by me before you got it from the original owner. The original owner thought it was too modern sounding and had me dial the gain structure and make less modern sounding.

Your right, that is why I won't do it anymore, I was basically begged to do it.

It was a one off for a friend, who promised not to sell it, and hence he did.

Moving to Amsterdam. Stepdown transformers or not

Step down and step up transformers are pretty good from my experience using them. Many of them are dual function, can be used as step up or step down. Just make sure the output is large enough 350 to 400 watt output should be fine.

Marshall amps has to be the most F'd up amp company

Marshall could really care less about making a killer amp, why? They as others have mentioned they have the branding. The average Joe, housewife and non musicians know who Marshall is. They are in countless movies, videos, TV commercials, you name it. Same as Gibson and Fender. The non educated...

    Billy Blades Update

Pretty much, the triple solder comment alone is proof, he is clueless on electronics and tube amps. Sure he can throw something together, but really doesn't know the design theory or how to layout correctly.

Looks to be the PT HV center tap, funny how it is too short and he had to splice it. Most transformers come with plenty of wire. So he either cut it too short, or most likely, the PT is a "Pull" from another amp.

    Orange VT1000 tube tester

Don't get me wrong, the VT1000 is good for weeding out duds and very bad tubes, but the new/worn readings are based and determined buy algorithms that are measuring transconductance, plate resistance and other values. If the tube has no shorts, leaks and sounds good in the amp don't sweat it. As...

G-major 2 in my loop effects

The G major 2 is the worst rack unit I have ever used as for altering the tone. It is because it digitizes the Dry signal and then converts it back. There is no real dry signal through on a G Major 2, it is digitizes then brought back to analog . The A/DA converters are not very good IMO. The...

    Orange VT1000 tube tester

The biggest problem with these new tube testers is they assume the tubes are made to a specific spec, which they are not even close. It is not that new tubes are worn, they just aren't built to spec. Also you will find that tubes that test for high gain in real world conditions are actually...

    Billy Blades Update

The amp is not so much as a rats nest build as it is a amateur child's build. Yes point to point amps and older fender amps can be quite rat nest like, but what sets this amp apart??? Terrible soldering, cold solder joints, these will cause problems down the road. Billy says in earlier posts he...

That looks like hot glue and not silicone, double dog fail........ That stuff will melt as soon as heat builds up the the chassis. But if you remember back to his build videos with the cab work, I don't think anyone would be too surprised.
